I know Sean has his “three key things” method to run his business and that is powerful.

Before I ran up on his three key things, I had five. They include what is necessary to set up a business, which takes just a bit more than running one.

I realized as my business changed and I changed directions I was so disorganized, couldn’t find a thing on the computer.

I made a root level folder named Business and then I put five folders in that folder

I put a number before them so they would appear in numerical order instead of alphabetical order.

    1. Planning
    2. Preparation
    3. Platform
    4. Products
    5. Promotion

All of my business activities fit into one of these folders.

Articles and blogs fit into promotion and programs I am making fit into products.

Planning is where I put the things I am thinking about doing or developing.

Preparation is where I put things I am working on that I intend to do or launch.

Platform is where I put things about the platforms I am on and how I am building my presence on those platforms, now I am including building my own platform.

Promotion is anything that has to do with marketing and promotion.

I wrote an article on ezine about it some time ago: http://ezinearticles.com/?How-To-Make-Money-With-The-Letter-P&id=9204536

What are your thoughts and how do you manage your business?

Very cool! Thanks, Scott. Number five is the one I really need to work on.

Great idea to organize your folders this way. It ensures you don’t miss anything.

Of course, I use My Inspired Year Weekly Planner to keep myself on track. (See how I covered number five there? 🙂 )

It deals with personal growth as well as business tasks, etc. If we don’t take care of the personal issues that hold us back, it can be impossible to get any traction toward our business goals.

Success starts between the ears, so seeing wins in small areas, like developing the right habits, can lead to bigger wins that can really make a difference. It’s a snowball effect.

      Norma,
I am going to have to look at your planner. I am in planner remission, I went to a 12 Step program for planner addicts.

      I LOVE planners!

I open that Business folder and see those five sub folders in order and know I need to have activity every day on all of them if it is just review.

That folder is in Google Back Up and Sync so it is on all of my devices and I didn’t lose a thing with my multiple hard drive crash.

      PS
      Planner is another P word!

Thanks, Scott. I just emailed you through your website about the planner.

      And yes… it starts with P! Maybe it’s a sign?? 🙂

I really like your five folder system. Since I have several things going, I would create five folders for each venture.

Sometime ago, I decided the computer ought to work with the way you think and give structure to how you think and work….

When I figure out how to do that I will get back with you 😉

In the meantime, I do the Five P system

I think Chet Holmes got fed up and bought a brand new computer and with his assistant arraigned the files on the hard drive so nothing was more than three clicks away.

I’ve organized my inbox, bookmarks, and computer with numbers for years.

It’s the only way that I can get everything to appear in the order that I want it.

My one bit of advice on this:

    whether you have 3 parts to your business, 5, or 7 . . .

remember . . don’t obsess over any one to the exclusion of others . . .and don’t get bogged down feeling like you have to do all 5 each day!

Thanks for confirming that it’s OK not to work on all parts of my business every day, Sean 🙂 – I’ve tried to at times, only to get behind in all parts! Lately, I’ve been putting Mon Tue etc on each item to do each week, and when one doesn’t get checked off on Tues, e.g., I make sure to do that one on Wed and if time runs out, skip one of the ones that did get done on Tues. Obviously, hard deadlines have to be met, but at least I’m moving forward in every area to some degree. It’s so easy to be overly optimistic, time-wise, on daily schedules.

I do agree that it is alright not to work on all parts of your business everyday. Some days it may make sense not to work on your business at all.

I do think you should look over all of the parts of the business everyday, even if you just take 60 seconds and take no actions. There are several reasons for that.

One is it keeps the subconscious mind active. It may come up with some good ideas by the time you get around to that part of the business again.

The next part is what I call exercising the habit. When I was seriously ill I couldn’t ride my exercise bike. Some days I was better than others, but a lot of days I was in no shape to exercise at all. I knew that exercise was key to recovering my health and fitness, so I made a vow I would sit on that bike every 24 hours. If I felt like it I did a little. If I didn’t feel like it I put my feet on the pedals and made one slow revolution. I would try again tomorrow.

If I couldn’t exercise my body, I could exercise the habit. In just over a month I was exercising on the bike every day. In three months I was as fit as ever.

Continuity is key to success. Any gap can be your downfall.

If you don’t work on your business, I suggest you work on your habit.

      Best,

Probably the one question that I now ask more than any other is “Why?”

    Why should I do this?

Or to rephrase it, “How will doing this help me to get closer to what I want to do?”

    If I don’t have a good answer, then I know that it’s a distraction.

    The clarity has been amazing!
