That is a great question.
For each project that I start I have goals and bench marks, if I am hitting these targets I will keep going and with every mile stone reached that further cements in my mind that I am heading in the right direction.
If I am missing my targets, I will have to stop my project and ask some questions about my endeavor.
I also like to keep everything simple (as few steps as possible). I have often heard it said that your business plan should be able to fit on a cocktail napkin.
