Hey, Sean. What’s the intention for this thread? How should we use it?

I’d be interested in talking to anyone who is utilizing alternative traffic sources. Specifically Craiglist or Reddit to promote an off-line business locally. What has been your experience?

When the time comes, I plan to generate traffic by talking to everyone I can about issues I think I am particularly suited to solve.
By the way, Sean is planning on conducting a bonus traffic class for his platform class any day now. He says he’ll be deeply covering alternative traffic sources in this training.

One thing I did was do a short video every day for thirty days and put it on Youtube and my blog. Each day I also put it up on my Facebook page with an automatic send to Twitter. I also put it on a Pinterest board I titled Training Videos and when relevant I added it to my LinkedIn profile. At the end of the month I put the videos up as a free Udemy course as well and within a month or two I had 10,000 students.
As a result of the various social media platforms and Udemy, I had people coming to my website who would never have found me otherwise.

Brian, don’t know if this qualifies, but I built my hypnosis business by promoting my website and the website gave useful information, had recorded samples, promoted me and offered a way to sign up for a free session.
So I ran ads in penny shopers, local papers, spoke at meetings, held free clinics and passed out many business cards that invited people to the website.
These things performed better than bing or google ads.
I could run a shopper ad for about $15 and have a return of $400-$500. Online ads didn’t come close. Keywords like weight loss and stop smoking were expensive.
People seemed more at ease according to their accounts after going online hearing my voice, hearing me explain what I do and how I do it, seeing the free offer and entering in their information in a simple form instead of having to make a call.
There is an old saying in hypnosis that the first thing you want to do is convince the prospective client you aren’t weird. My website and sample recordings put people at ease.
Maybe something here you can make apply to you.

Thanks, Scott. I’ve gained a lot by interacting face to face at conferences and networking events. Sometimes we are so concerned with the “world-wide” web that we neglect the local prospects who need what we are offering.

Many say SEO is dead, but it’s alive and well. The search engines are smarter now, though. You can’t spam keywords and rank. You have to earn traffic via targeted content and generating interest.
Build it and they will come is a little bit true … but promotion to get the wheels turning sure does help.

Scott, thank you for reminding me that marketing yourself online isn’t the only method there is, even when your business is online. I think we’ve gotten to new phase with the Internet where many of us are realizing the value of former marketing methods that fell by the way side when the Internet took over.

Bryan, I can show you how to use a newsletter to connect locally and leverage those connections pretty quickly. It would take too long to describe here, but if you connect with me on skype (jansandhousehurst), I’ll talk you through it. If you need more help, I’ll do it if you promise feedback and a testimonial if I earn it!
Carol, thanks for the tips. I haven’t tried Udemy, but I will!

Scott- Everyone always wants a good ROI and we (in Internet Marketing) always tend to forget ‘old school’ stuff like penny shoppers and even business cards. Thanks for the reminder and I think it is something that I need to REALLY put some effort into because ROI from IM stuff is sometimes way lower than tried and true methods…especially if we figured in the time we put into some of the IM efforts and put a dollar amount to what our time is worth. Thanks again.
If you're looking for a someone to bounce things off of in the IM world, I'm your guy and I really would love to help you out. Helping others is just who I am!

SEO works in some niches, but certainly not all of them.
In my day job, it doesn’t work.
Our keywords either mean things other than what we mean or hardly anyone is searching for those terms.
