January 1st is always a let down for me. Has been that way for as long as I can remember.

Hate staying up late just to “see in the New Year.”

I’m also reminded more forcefully of all that I failed to do, and I don’t need that.

So while some find the New Year to be a motivator, I’d rather that we didn’t make anything of it at all.

Maybe we could have 840 months. That’s 70 x 12 months. Then a year would cover a lifetime.

For newbies, I remember Sean telling me that it didn’t matter what order I did things in. That I would have to do them all anyway.

But since I was stuck, he told me what to do next.

Sometimes we just need to be given permission to take a step, especially if we don’t know which one to take.

A “Like” emoji, or a choice of them, I think would be good.

Sometimes you just want to agree with a comment someone else has made, and Thanks doesn’t seem appropriate.

Actually what you have to do is click Pal Core Access.

Then on the far right of the page, but not quite at the top, you’ll see the path in small, linkable print: Home –> Forum.

If you click on the word Forum, then you get the page you suggested.

If, instead, you click on Home Page in the navigation bar, then you’ll be take to the page that tells you to log in.

There’s a web site – can’t think what it’s called right now – that lets you test the speed of your site load.

It then tells you all the problems that you have and how to fix them.

Common problems are things to do with combining CSS, when the JS loads, and how often the site is accessed.

For a techie, fixing these things is a cakewalk.

For a non-techie, like me, they’re a nightmare. I have no idea what any of that means or what to do about it.

As Google has started to stress the speed of a site more, this kind of things has become an issue.

Guidance on how a non-techie can solve this without hiring a techie would be extremely helpful.

Do you use ad-blockers in your browser?

    If not, then you should.

For Chrome, use Ad-block and Ad-block Plus.

You’ll have to check to see what the equivalent is in other browsers.

Of course, some sites won’t let you look at the content without turning your ad-blocker software off.

Here’s how you get around that.

Open an incognito window and paste the URL in the address bar.

Now you can leave your ad-blockers on for your normal browser use, but still view the content in the site that has ads.

One site that my clients send me to periodically is BusinessInsider. I just tried the method suggested to see if it worked, and it did.

    Thanks for sharing this, Malik.

What many people don’t realize is that we all have a “voice.” And that voice has to be consistent in everything you do.

In my experience, good writing can sound very much the same, regardless of who writes it; but there will be subtle nuances. The use of certain words is a good example. Certain expressions or idioms may also surface.

Years ago, I was asked to grade some papers for college (university) students. One of them obviously had two authors. All of a sudden, the style changed – right in the middle. I can’t imagine what the student was thinking. LOL

That kind of thing can be a disaster in your marketing.

    I actually think it’s a good thing.

That’s because it forces those of us at the top to focus on the forum itself.

    Think of it like this.

If you were brand new, just coming into the forum, and you saw that some people had made hundreds, even thousands, of contributions, wouldn’t you feel at least a little intimidated?

I’ve been in forums like that, and I noticed that my focus changed over time.

Instead of trying to see how much value I could add, I found myself trying to compete with the top people.

This way, it’s more difficult to know how you rank.

    And I like that.

One of the things I’ve often wondered about, Tina, is what the design of the “cover” of a product should be.

Ebooks and reports are pretty straightforward. You use a book icon or spiral notebook icon, respectively.

But what should we use for audio recordings, or videos?

Back in the day, icons of CDs were popular; but they’re not relevant anymore.

    What do you suggest?

For me, I was so jaded by the time I made my first sale, that it had no effect whatsoever.

I suspect that the excitement would arrive, or come back, when there was a steady stream.

You said yourself, Sean, that the first month you made (I forget that exact amount) about $150. The next month it doubled. Then it doubled or trebled again. And each month was bigger than the previous month.

Results like that would put magic into the lives of most people.

I don’t usually make a big deal out of this kind of thing. That’s because I get “told off” about how it’s all just a bit of fun.

But the four colors sound an awful lot like a personality questionnaire, and I know quite a lot about how instruments like this are constructed, what they can and can’t tell you, and what they actually mean.

I could write an intricate discussion on the topic that would probably put most of you to sleep. LOL.

The primary thing I want you to remember is to avoid categorizing yourself as one to the exclusion of the others. Otherwise, you’ll do yourself a disservice.

I’m happy to write a long post about this when that part of the forum is working if you want me to, or you can PM me and ask questions instead.

My own feeling is that the leaderboard is counterproductive.

The reason is that it takes the focus away from “how can I help people” and makes it into “how can I get on top” or “who can I next get ahead of.”

When that happens, the quality of the comments diminishes.

The goal of the forum should be the mutual benefit of all who are in it, and I don’t think that the leaderboard encourages that.

Some forums identify participants as “founder members,” or “platinum contributors.” (I’m making up these terms.)

I don’t see how that kind of thing can be done without making people feel that they were less important because they couldn’t become whatever someone else was.

As long as all of us, especially the new people as they come on board, feel like peers, we’ll contribute as peers; but as soon as you introduce different levels of achievement that are obvious, such as is in a leaderboard or a label that’s based on longevity or the level of participation, you change the forum into a contest. And those who feel that they stand no chance of “winning” will be discouraged from getting involved. That’s the opposite of what we want.

All of us will know how active someone else is by the number of topics they’ve started, the number of comments given, thanks given and received which is shown under the avatar of each person. To me, that’s the subtle way, and the right way, to make a distinction between us.

Even though there are a lot of sites on the Internet already about insomnia, Jen, wouldn’t you agree that it’s still a problem?

If that’s the case, then there has to be a reason. Maybe there’s more than one reason.

I know a lady, for instance, who hasn’t been able to sleep without medication for 20 years. When her husband died, her ability to sleep naturally also died. She tells me that just as she’s about to drop off, she suddenly jerks, and that wakes her up.

It’s also widely recognized that most Americans are sleep-deprived. They work long hours. They try to do too much. They have long commutes. Whatever the reason.

If you can create a solution that will help people to sleep better and more easily, then you’ll make all the sites that have failed to do this obsolete.

You can disrupt an entire industry if you can find a solution.

Now it could be that the solution has already been found, and that the problem is one of implementation.

If that’s the case, then you’ll need to develop a method to deal with that as well.

Whatever you do, however: If it works, if it enables people to sleep, then you’ll be onto a winner.

    OK. I get it.

I wouldn’t worry about what the previous owner has or hasn’t done.

Domain name change hands all the time and so does the content. If it’s not even listed in Google, then it probably has been “parked” for awhile.

If you get it, then you’ll be the one that gives it its new “personality.”

    Hi Julie.

It’s called Pingdom, though I know that there are others that are also free, but more comprehensive.

I knew about the change in net neutrality, but in the UK (where I live for now), there have always been tiers for speed. Some get various speeds on broadband, and only a relative few get fiber.

Recently, a law was passed about the speeds advertised. The “up to” speeds far exceed what actually happens.

Where I live right now, I get 5-6 MBps download on a good day and < 1 MBps upload. I’ve seen it around zero for both.

I’m hoping to move in February. In that location, there are a number of possibilities. “Up to 17 MBps, up to 56 MBps, up to 76 MBps (fiber).” I’m planning to go for the middle tier. Even if it turned out to be only half right, it would be a 500% improvement. LOL

    Hi Julie,

A good first question might be to explain where you are and what you’ve done, and then ask what you should do next.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and just having someone tell you what the next step should be is a tremendous help. It’s almost as though you’re given “permission” to set aside everything else.

Thing is that unless you’re selling your technical skill, you find that which is the easiest and the quickest and get on with it.

As you say, Jan, choose what is easy to create and repurpose.

Bruce, how true that is. Maybe the trick is to find one thing that is easy to repurpose in many different formats without a lot of extra work.

Not every repurposing method will be appropriate for everyone, and not all content will lend itself to all the repurposing that you do.

For example, some blog posts might do well as videos, while others will work better as infographics.

Just bear in mind that each platform has its own audience, and that each audience has different expectations for how they want to see the information that you present.

Yes. Donna. There are two ways to do this.

If you’ve originated a question, then you can access all of them by going to Members, finding your profile, and then clicking on Forums.

The second way is probably harder, though it used to be easy.

You’ve probably noticed that when you open a post, whether you originated it or not, at the top right is the word Favorite. That word is active. If you click it, then it will change to Favorited. And then you should be able to go to a list of your favorited posts.

If you favorite a post that you’re commenting in, then you’ll be able to find it.

Now it used to be that there was a link at the bottom of the Access page that would take you to a page called My Favorites. That link doesn’t seem to be there anymore.

I haven’t tried it, but I’m wondering if it still exists, and if it couldn’t be found by altering the suffix in the URL to something like “my-favorites.”

As the forum is still a work in progress, I imagine that it will come back at some point.

    Hope this helps.

I’ve had to develop a kind of routine in this forum.

First I check the new and unread comments and see if I can add something to those discussions that will benefit them.

Then I head over to the member’s section and invite people.

I also click on my name to see if anyone has sent me a private message. So far, there’s no way of knowing that short of actually looking.

If I can think of a good question – something that will get people to think – then I’ll ask it; and if I get an idea for an article, then I’ll make some notes for later, or write it on the spot.

    Question for you, Malik.

Did you create your avatar when you first started, or did you use feedback and things like split-testing to gain an understanding of your ideal customer, and then create your avatar on the basis of that?

I ask the question because I don’t think that these things can be done in a vacuum.

I’ve long felt that your customers define your niche. And so as people buy your products, you then begin to understand better the sort of thing they need. The more that that happens, the easier it is to figure out what your ideal customer looks like.

I’m kinda in the same boat as you, Jen. Don’t want to make the wrong choice.

I did choose one combination, but then switched autoresponders; and so now I have to go back and fix everything.

That said, I’m planning to pull the product for the time being.

The thing is that no shopping cart or payment option will be perfect. Even the most expensive options have problems, not least is their cost.

What I suggest is that you find the two or three autoresponders you like the most, the payment gateways you like the most, and the shopping carts (if you’re going to use one) that you like the most. List the pros and cons of the contenders.

Then decide on the combination that gives you the lesser of evils, and then see if you can connect them.

More and more, the good ones are learning to play well together.

I see what you mean, Scott. I just know that for myself that it’s possible to wait when I shouldn’t and to put too much emphasis on some future date.

The goal is to achieve the resolution, if I can put it like that. For me, that means creating an environment that makes it the most likely to happen.

Dana, here’s an idea you might try.

There’s a lot of educated guesswork in it but, given your experience, you’re probably pretty good at it.

Make a list of the top five options. You’ll have to decide what the criteria is.

Then next to each one, estimate the probability that it will occur.

Then multiply the probability times the value of the opportunity.
