Here is an example of “Being Your own Google” : Badger and Blade https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/

They have over 79,000 members, over 9 million posts, over 39,000 items for view in their media gallery.

If I want to know anything about shaving, anything: blades, razors, soap, history, brands, reviews, superstitions, contests, stories, metallurgy, restoration, old advertising, beards and mustaches, father-son traditions, even women’s shaving for my wife I go there and search for it. Google can’t compete and just gets in the way.

First, I have to say that I think this is largely what Sean is thinking and working on, but I have had my personal “I got it” moment and how it applies to what I am doing and maybe what you are doing. Give credit where it is due.

To become the platform for everything on your topic will take a lot of work, but if you have been working for years then, how much work have you done already on things that never worked or are not working now?

How much work will you do in the next years? If you don’t give up you will do plenty of work to keep up with the changing winds of the internet.

You might as well work on something that works and no one can take away from you.

You know, I might just teach a course on this.

What would it take to “Become Your Own Google?”

First, you would have to be a one stop location for everything in your topic.

Jay Abraham teaches the strategy of preeminence, your goal is to become the preeminent source for everything in your topic. For years in industry I had to buy IBM computers because they were the preeminent choice in the market. IBM clones were cheaper and often had the same hardware, but we all know you are going to have a problem with a computer sometime and when it happened I knew my superiors would say, “Why didn’t you buy IBM?”

I stuck with the preeminent brand. My superiors were sold on it. Magazines were playing the role of Google in those days saying “Clones are as good as IBM, look at these brands” but IBM in those days overpowered the noise in the market that said, just as good.

Talk about leverage, I saw an IBM ad that said, “When cheap computers say they are just as good as another brand, it is always IBM that they claim to be as good as. IBM, the standard everyone tries to attain…” They turned around the good as claims to their advantage. Marketing Judo.

You want people to say, “Why didn’t you go to Norma.com?” (more likely what don’t you try Norma.com) or whatever your website is, when they do you will have something. If you want it make it a goal.

Here is how things work now, people search for answers and information, Google (or any search engine) ranks the sites that somehow correlates with the search terms. You are probably in there, but it could be page 33 or 58 based on a machine you will never see and how it ranks you based on a program you will never understand and how it decided to rank you and perhaps the worst part is, if you figure out enough to win today, the same approach won’t work tomorrow or next week or sometime soon and you don’t know when it won’t work, just that it won’t. When the account you make your living on goes dry, that could be your first clue things changed. “Oh, we can’t pay the house payment this month, I guess Google changed something again!”

You are also ran. Not first place, not second place or even third, but also ran, but be truthful, how many pages of search results do you go through? I seldom get past the first and the third page doesn’t exist as far as I am concerned. Sad, but true. When I started I remember bragging that I made it to page five, but honestly page five doesn’t exist in your prospect’s world.

If you aren’t a big company with a big budget you aren’t going to make it to number one and if you somehow through clean living and blood, sweat and tears do make it to number one, any fad or cat video can knock you off, off number one, off the first page, off anything people will see.

I worked and worked and created content, answered questions, wrote kindle books, even was on a few guest blogs and became number one on Google for my search terms and someone that put those search terms on a tee shirt and made top heavy women jogging wearing the tee shirt videos knocked me off and when I started falling I never made it back up.

I had worked hard at driving traffic, but not on getting people to stick, to belong, to invite others, to participate. So when the traffic dried up, it got lonely.

I had a financial website and was knocked off number one search results for my terms and my domain name actually had those terms in the domain name by women jogging in a tee shirt.

It was like people not finding Ford.com when looking for Fords. Want information on Fords? Well here are some nice cat videos and one of the cats is named Ford, one is named Focus and another one is big, fat and fluffy, we call him F-150.

A domain name that was made up of search terms was beat out on those terms by women jogging in tee shirts. I began to wonder if I was the only sane person in the world.

Back to the traffic process. So they return this list of search results and you might be seen on it and you might not and they click one and go back to the search results, they click another and go back to the results and they click another and somewhere in there they may find something that interests them and go through the content there. I call it circular search engine traffic. They keep circling back to the search engine.

(took a break and checked, I am back to number five, I think making a page and posting on facebook did it, but five isn’t number one and the guy with the tee shirts is nowhere to be found, so don’t consider that a permanent strategy, you can tell I am still smarting and a bit touchy over the tee shirt incident)

Here is what you want, they search for something, see your website and you capture them, they are trapped in your huge, plenty of answers, plenty of content, plenty of resources, they can interact and participate, interesting looking website, with contests, balloons, hot dogs and a band and Taco Tuesdays and you take them away from Google. They don’t go back.

You also seed (or breadcrumb if you prefer) your website through forums, blogs, Ezine, youtube, facebook, instagram, twitter, the whole gambit of places you can post and someone see it on the internet, maybe even for some people post on craigslist.

I call it Google Judo. You use their strength to take the traffic away from them.

You work with their process and you punch holes in it by becoming your own search engine.

Someone, somehow winds up on your website, well people are lazy. If you have a way to search the zillion articles, videos, free content and stories on your website that connect with what they are interested in, why go back to Google, just search on your site, it is standing out right there in front of them. You could give them a hint, just say, “Search for everything _____ here!” and you fill in the blank with your topic.

Come to think of it, if they came through google or bing or yahoo or startpage or duck duck go, they are in search mode. If you don’t offer them something that aligns with that mode, it is like you have a sign on your website that says, “GO BACK TO GOOGLE!”

You have got to spell it out for them “Welcome to the platform for everything ______”

Oh, it says they are the platform for everything __________, I guess they must be the platform for everything ________.

Now, what about this group? We could cross promote. You could have “Be Your Own Google” and also have “We Are Our Own Google” and the we would be us!

I actually think that is a direction Sean is working on. We need to find his address and send him pizza so he doesn’t have to slow down to eat….

    Best,

@Norma, yes it is a high aspiration and I know you get it, but for anyone that doesn’t, you don’t have to become the Google for everything, just the Google for what you do.

You can’t out Google, Google across the whole internet and every word, topic and subject, but if you are here I am betting you are an expert on your topic, you are passionate about it and you have a heart. Google certainly doesn’t have a heart and how passionate are search results?

I have some ideas and when I get to my laptop, I will post more.

@Susan, I have a similar story to your husband. I became the leading expert in this part of the US in something that went overseas and is done by robots.

I made two house payments on a house we bought when we moved for the job and then I came home and told my wife it is over. We got bought out and I have seen robots making robots. It is over.

    Your story resonated with me.

After years of frequent disappointment in Internet marketing I have to say I think I am excited.

Together we just might be dangerous!

Bruce you are quite right about the rules. In the traditional model they are always changing and we are at their mercy, which they have none.

We are chasing clients and subscribers. We seek them.

In Sean’s platform model they seek you. Your platform is a beacon. They see you and follow your light to the shore.

There is your evergreen traffic source. You build a free source of information that is almost like a free membership. Then you market products, including a paid membership option there.

You seed it on forums and guest blogs and solo ads on other sites and maybe Facebook and YouTube and Instagram and Ezine.

When it reaches critical mass, you don’t care if Google changes its rules and logarithms.

You are your own Google. A place people go for answers.

I was struggling with this in my post: platform vs membership. I think I see the light now.

Donna, I know what you mean. I hear you. I would like that for Christmas.

Unfortunately I don’t think there is a solid, continuous and perpetual traffic stream or source. Things change, you saturate a given source by reaching the ones most likely to follow you, somebody changes the rules or another social media platform starts and MySpace and Frendster dry up. Twitter is a shadow of what it used to be for internet marketers. The body count keeps going up for effective social media and sources that dried up.

I decided on Google Adwords that I was effectively bidding against myself. My keywords went up in price over the run of a campaign and if I quit a month or two they came back down. The third time I saw that I thought this is crazy.

I can’t do the things I used to when I started 12 years ago and get any response, I don’t mean less, I mean not any.

I hear Sean talk about doing different things every month and testing them.

I am revamping everything I do and I am following Sean closely. I will need a magic traffic faucet when I open the doors.

He started with Ezine articles and I have got some subscribers from Ezine, but it isn’t like it used to be.

I know Sean did Warrior offers, but that platform split into two. May still work, but the playing field has to have changed.

I hear people doing Youtube and seeing results, but only after weeks or months of work. With Youtube changing their rules lately I am not sure anyone knows how long term that will affect things. I hear of people that put hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars into videos and just as it was taking off, it fell off. Of course they still have the videos to use for other purposes, but you have to feel for them.

The last kindle book I did didn’t sell enough to cover the marketing and brought in zero subscribers. When I first got on the kindle platform it was my biggest internet source of income and subscribers.

Then there is Udemy, someone told me they have got really restrictive now in what you can do to promote you, they want it all to stay on their platform. Someone here does Udemy, you might search for them. I am still considering them.

I really like Sean’s method of signing up to forums and posting there to get noticed as you help people, but did you see him throw out the number of 200 forums? That has to be work. Small forums you will saturate with exposure and larger ones come and go. I belong to one forum that had hundreds of posts a day not two years ago and a dozen is a big day now. They changed a few rules, like you can’t mention anything in a post now, you have to buy advertising for anything that looks like promotion and they decided they would rein in the wild, wild, west posting, so they got more moderators and turned them loose. Pretty quiet now. You can hear a revenue drop.

I have never done a banner or solo ad, there I admitted it. I hear from those that do that they are hit or miss, could be good, great or a bust. You have to be willing to try them, spend the money and see what works and keeps working for you. I asked one “Guru” where they were advertising and he point blank said, do you think I will tell you? That told me that good sites were rare and protected, not to mention changing. I expect to try banner/solo ads anyway.

Joint ventures are a chicken and egg thing, if you don’t have a good list and are established they won’t fool with you and if you do have a good list and are established you don’t really need them.

Under the current structure of the internet I think we are going to have to bait a lot of hooks and keep a lot of lines in the water as things change. I don’t want to build my internet business on one source of traffic anyway. Bridgestone-Firestone was my biggest physical business customer in the real world when they had the largest tire recall in history and laid off 300 people in just one office building. I almost went bankrupt, I had borrowed money to be able to service them. They closed one entire office building.

I learned to like the “many sources that bring in a little each” model for my income. Sort of bite-sized income sources.

Not trying to be negative, don’t shoot the messenger. It is just in my experience, One, if you find something that works jump in with both feet because things change, get it while it is hot and Two, always be looking for the next good source.

Maybe Sean has charged the batteries in his magic wand and will post and tell us there really is a Santa Claus and an evergreen traffic source.
Who knows? It is getting close to Christmas…

    Wishing you the very best!
    Encouraging you to keep swinging,

Just scanned over your website before I ran out the door and I think it looks great, very professional.

I don’t know how you use it. If you send people to it or have a list and promote to it.

I had to dig a bit to find the free training that you are using for a squeeze page to get subsribers I take it.

Have you considered putting it on the front page up at the top to help you build a list from any home page traffic?

    Just thinking outloud

    Sean,
    Thanks for your response.

I have several websites that are on different topics. Even though they are different topics, there is easily some overlap in the interest of people as you teach in your training. I might be interested in gardening, but also in healthy diets for example. In your training I think I heard for an example you say Divorced men, Divorced women, pastors, millennials, all might be interested in finding purpose, meaning and spiritual direction in their lives.

You also said something like since some topics appeal to hundreds of millions of people you could advertise just about anywhere and hit those markets.

So the question is, how can I send traffic from one website, say the money website or the health website, to the coaching website? That way it would be like putting ads on other people’s websites, but for people that already know me and at no cost.

I could send emails on the money list that promote the health list and website, but people that come to the money site and didn’t take action, might actually find the health offer or website more of interest to them.

So the purpose is traffic and of course first to help them and then to sell them something that will help them in a deeper way and provide income to keep the message going by funding me.

I figure with your experience you can shed more light on how this might work.

    Thanks!

I think infusion soft wanted $1,000 minimum to set me up, just to basically open an account.

That may work for the ongoing businesses, but not for my niece working on her couch.

I know they offer a lot of services, but I laughed at them. I couldn’t help it.

So you want me to spend $1,000 to be able to start paying you…..?

I think I started on Get Response for $15 a month. Sean suggested it because I was having trouble with the others I had tried.
They are pretty good on helping you.

I just do the basics with them, but they do squeeze pages and have extras like webinars now.

    Leslie,
Thank you for your reply. I think you and Don agree in some ways on the format. When you said Kindle book, I realized it is a Kindle format template that I used for it, I bought it from a best selling Kindle author.

You are right about Sean using big ebook giveaways. I think he used a 195 page ebook once. He teaches to put your best foot forward to make a good first impression. You may have heard his training where he talks about some giveaways not fitting to be printed on toilet paper or something like that.

There is some disagreement on giving away a bigger freebie. Some say that it will delay the purchase of anything since they will have to process it to decide they want more, but others say it establishes value, that if you give away this, then your material for sale must be phenomenal.

I have heard that the follow up emails can determine the pace of the first sale, “If you haven’t read the entire guide yet, but you have seen enough to know this is right for you, then get this audio you can play in the car, take with you and increase your progress and make it 10 times! faster” Things like that.

I will have to look over it with diagrams and charts in mind.

Cheat sheet is something to think about.

    Thanks,
    Scott Hogue CChH

    Don,
Thanks for your comments and I really mean that, they have reinforced what I have heard about everything I have ever shown people to review that I have written. You are much, much kinder than some.

I got an acidic email once that only idiots use two spaces after a period, but this particular idiot was taught that in Mrs. Stewart’s typing class and no one sent me the memo that it had changed. I checked it out and they were right, I don’t know about the idiot part, but they were right about the two spaces changing and it was the hardest habit I ever broke.

I took the complaints I got about using too many commas and using them incorrectly to a woman that had a phd in English or Grammar, I forget just what, but she was the head of the department. She laughed and said that I was right technically and commas could correctly be used for separation of items, breathing, emphasis, to set a statement apart or when the writer wanted to establish a pace to the writing. She said we no longer use one before the word “and” in a series, but that was correct the old way. She said drop that and I give you permission to use a comma any time in any way you want and with my authority I can do that! I wish I had got it in writing.

People find the misspelled words and the format issues, no one ever says “I think you are wrong on this point you are teaching or I think this would work in my life or I have that problem, I can see myself in this” it is all about the wrapper the message is delivered in.

It is frustrating to me since I enjoy teaching live and in person and no one ever has said after I teach live “you stutter too much or I don’t like how you use phrases.”

I certainly don’t have perfect diction or a golden tongue, but they don’t object to my verbal delivery. I always got straight ten’s in my audience ratings in the speaker’s network.

I have actually thought about giving up writing and go purely verbal with recordings. I think that we are taught in school to be critical of text, spelling and comma faults, etc, so when we see anything written we automatically go into editor mode, just like reviewing our school work before it is graded and often miss the message entirely. I would have given up, but I personally need to see things. I will listen to Sean and then make outlines or charts of his teaching so I can get what he is teaching. He usually doesn’t have printable content. I want to cover that base for my visual learners.

I don’t personally like graphics mixed with my text, they just get in the way of the reading for me, but I know you are right, people are into graphics and that is a great idea. I didn’t even think about it. Strange since I am visual, but most graphics that I notice are just pictures that get in the way of the text and my reading. I think graphics that convey information are great.

I think about giving up with writing and text, at this point I am not going back to learn what is current or proper, then I think we are living in a text message world. My daughter can send me a message that I perfectly understand and not fully spell a single word in the message. It drives me nuts, but I am getting used to it. So my poor writing and formatting is head and shoulders above what this generation is doing, maybe I should hang on and wait for them.

For the record, you said italics was a horrible way to make a point. I find that interesting. I must be out of date on that too, it is one of the things I see in the classical success books that I like most and I copied it. When rereading I can scan the pages and quickly find the key points I am looking for.
    What do you suggest different?

    thank you again,

    Sean,
Everything you say and propose sounds good and we surely seem to be building and on the right track.

If I might throw an idea out there for consideration and some reworking, even rejecting.

All learning without action is at best a form of entertainment. To reach our goals there must be action. I am thinking about action groups.

There are going to be people joining here at different times and will take different amounts of time here to be ready to start.

Some aren’t coming to go through the Sean Steps, they already started with Sean or you offer something that they found they need and that is fine and they bring experience and knowledge to our community.

I am thinking out loud that we might want a place for the “Group Going Through The Sean Steps of the month”

So if three people now are ready to go through your training and steps this month, they are in the November 2017 group, an open group anyone can watch an even post on, but the focus is on people going through that month.
Next month a few more people join, a few more have looked over the training and posts and they are ready and we have a December 2017 group going through.

After a number of months, the posts from the groups would almost make a course on going through the steps with Sean.

When we do training in our services business and hire people we have quarterly boot camps. We want all in this quarter’s group to be able to do abc and 123, so we focus on abc and 123, then we turn them loose in the world and prepare for the next boot camp to get those people to do abc and 123.

It is a bit of a vague idea, but I am putting it out for consideration. Some way for like minded people with like goals to start together and go through together. Action Groups.

In any case, we are doing really well and just starting,

    Dana,
Good point. I didn’t follow through as I should have, but I got 409 views, of these about 3% clicked the download or 12, which I am guessing of the 409 about 9 give or take were my tests and a few of my friends looking it over, so I am saying 3%. So 12 subscribers and 9 wrote at least one email to me in the coming month or so with questions and comments, which I thought was a surprising number or percentage. One asked for the session, but canceled because of something coming up with her and didn’t reschedule. I had several more give aways and helpful emails I offered and sent in the campaign, but in this particular test I never got to a sales offer other than I would have made an offer in the session if anyone had taken me up on the session.

Life happens and you get off track. It is like going to the movies and buying a ticket, but not going in. I did all that work and just when I was nearing a win I got sidetracked.

That is why I am here,
    thank you so much,

I am as bad as anyone, maybe worse. No doubt coaches need coaches.

I am trying to remember the famous female author that had an invalid husband she cared for and children to raise. She decided she had to write for them to have an income and live.

After the children left home she said she actually found it harder to write. She didn’t have the money pressures and without children she struggled with inertia. Things in their life gave her ideas to write about. inertia is not a choice when the house is full of children.

So her disadvantage she used as an advantage. I can imagine her thinking if only I didn’t have to worry about money or take care of the children, then I could really write!

Is there a way you could actually use your hectic routine in some way as an advantage?

I know it sounds crazy, but when I work with people and they say they can’t do this or that to solve their problems, I explain nothing changes until something changes. You have to break out of your I can’t succeed under these circumstances thinking.

If you had to work your new goals into your routine or face unacceptable consequences, how would you do that?

Instead of working on your goal tasks first, maybe the best goal is to first work on better ways of getting things done.

New techniques, new approaches, out sourcing, cutting out non essential items…

    The best of “luck”

Bruce, you might find this interesting, I guess I am getting off topic here, so I will say this and quit. Since it has to do with the truthfulness and the accuracy of a classic story, maybe it isn’t too far off.

My grandfather died in 1984, but in 1987 when I bought my first copy of Think and Grow Rich, I realized he had told me the rest of a story that was in the book…

In Chapter One, Introduction or Thoughts Are Things in my 1987 edition, Napoleon Hill tells how that Henry Ford wanted a V-8 engine and his engineers said it was impossible. In the book Hill tells how Ford went back over and over again telling them to keep at it as they kept saying it was impossible and after over a year, “as if by a stroke of magic, the secret was discovered.”

That is not exactly how I heard it. I will tell you about that “magic.”

My grandfather operated the first motor powered road grader in Kentucky and before that he worked mule teams. Since he could read he was picked to test the motor powered road grader. The grader came with an operating manual like a newspaper sheet folded several times and it was on a Government job and they wanted a written report of how the machine performed. My grandfather could read and write, he was the son of a school trustee, so he was chosen. (in case you are wondering the report read something like this, “It did pretty well out of the ditch, but if you got it in the ditch and wanted it out again, you had better keep the mules handy)

AS he rose in the road building business, my grandfather for a time became friends with one of Henry Ford’s original engineers, one that worked on the V-8 engine. The man later worked for a company that was developing road building/dirt moving equipment.

He told my grandfather the V-8 story like this, “Ford wanted an eight cylinder motor cast with a one piece block casting to eliminate the problems that came with bolting two 4 cylinder engines together and we couldn’t get it to work out with the foundry. We kept telling him the foundry guys weren’t working with us and he said keep at it. He thought we were just placing the blame on someone else. One day he came in and said, “I may be wrong, I may not be able to have an eight cylinder engine with a single block, but I know one thing for sure, I can have engineers that won’t say it is impossible!” and he put them on notice that they would lose their jobs if they didn’t deliver.

The engineers got together and went down to the foundry and they told the foundry men if they didn’t cast a #&%#@$! block in one piece like they wanted there would be a terrible fight. After a lot of yelling, peace prevailed when a foreman told the foundry men that if Ford got wind of this they wouldn’t have a job and the foundry men and the engineers got together and worked out the one piece block and Ford had a V-8 engine “like magic.”

The men at the foundry didn’t want to quit making the four cylinder block to experiment on the eight cylinder block. Somehow about how they were paid or their production numbers had entered into the problem and as such they would only piddle at the project over the previous year at odd times, not wishing to waste their time with it.

That is how I heard it,
    The rest of the story,

Thanks Bruce, that is a very nice thing to say.

I imagine there is a limited audience for it, but we often don’t value what we have under our own roof.

I think sometimes of writing my memoirs…I knew George Lindsey who was Goober on Andy Griffith and much smarter than he acted, Douglas Spears the WWII war hero was my history teacher, I knew Rory Calhoun the western star, he was a friend of a man that owned the tv shop in my home town, they met when he was doing town to town promotions. Rory was a hoodlum growing up, but someone turned him on to acting and he turned his life around, helped a lot of boys in trouble as an actor. A tribal chief in Africa I befriended gave me 400 acres and I made an orphan’s farm on it. That is a place where you can tell who the chief is because he has a bucket to sit on, the rest don’t even have a bucket to sit on.

The children got tired of hearing my Zig Ziglar tapes and stories as they grew up and my wife doesn’t laugh at my jokes anymore.

We were buying some jewelry for my wife recently and I said something to the saleswoman and she laughed out loud, said your husband has a wicked sense of humor.
My wife rolled her eyes and said, “You get used to it after 24 years…”

I guess I preach mostly to the choir.

    Wishing you the best,
    Scott Hogue CChH

    Onofrio,
I am a Certified Christian Hypnotist.

I used the title in advertising and found the Christians didn’t like the hypnotist part and the non-Christians didn’t like the Christian part.
    Not a marketing success.
I went back to Strategic Life Coach in my advertising that again and more people came for help, I built a practice, but I seemed to hit a wall early on and the clients fell off.

I know this woman that is a successful secular hypnotist, but not without spiritual belief. I went to her as a coach and she asked me what was the certification of all of my certifications that I was most proud of and closest to my heart. I told her I worked harder for CChH than any other and I felt satisfying the fellowship for acceptance was my hardest test of competence and sincerity. The rest of them was just pay the money and pass the written test and don’t let the door hit you as you leave. She then asked why don’t you use it? I made excuses, I said no one knew what it meant, no one was looking for a Certified Christian Hypnotist, Christians were afraid of hypnotism and non-Christians were afraid of Christians.

She said that if you don’t use it, aren’t you denying yourself? How can you prosper if you deny yourself?

Mentally I hit a happy medium by advertising Strategic Life Coach as I used to, but using my title with my name. Every time I wrote it, in a way I accepted myself and didn’t have some strange undertow of internal conflict.

Since then I have had people over and over hunt me down saying I am looking for the Christian Hypnotist. I get a call about every week like that.

The original business cards that say CChH and hypnotist are gathering dust on the shelf, it has been years since I ran a hypnotist ad in the paper, but people that have never seen the old website come and ask for me. Sometimes they are referred by people I saw long ago, other times a doctor sent them, sometimes they show me a card they have kept for years. I can’t bring myself to shut the old website down, even though I don’t use it anymore. I fancy to myself it would be like turning a light off for those in darkness. A few times a year someone finds it and fills out the contact form.

There is a lesson here somewhere, but I am not sure I could explain it.

At the least it is “Be True To Yourself.”

I remember when I lost my professional innocence.

For almost three decades I have been a member of a speakers network, I am not too active now, with the wife and the grandchildren to help with I don’t travel much and it is all about travel. I have met a lot of people through the group. Speakers, popular leaders, business men and women, head of charities, you name it. I worked for a few Fortune 500 companies too and met a lot of people through those connections. Then I do missionary work and have rubbed elbows with donors and leaders.

When I first joined the speakers group way back when, there was this man running for president that spoke at a member’s event. Real firebrand, was going to balance the budget, rebuild our infrastructure, get our economy going, fix our schools, run things right in the country for a change. I was impressed! This man obviously knew how to get things done. He was obviously successful and could bring that success to running our nation. He had a book out that told how he became a success and you can too! I was going to see if they were selling it at the event.

I ran up on him in the bathroom and I told him how much I enjoyed his speech.

He acted like he didn’t even hear me, but we did have a conversation.

Straight away he said, “You are a member with this group aren’t you?”
    Yes.
    “Do they cater lunch?”
Not at this event, it is mostly members.
“What do they do for lunch?”
Well, members usually break out in groups and go out for an hour or so.
“Do you think the head of the group would pay for my lunch, I don’t have enough money to pay for lunch?”

He is running for president and is going to balance our budget and doesn’t have the money for lunch. He has a book on how you can be as successful as him and after the conversation I didn’t buy it. He went on to see if I could pick up his lunch if no one else offered.

I told him if no one else offered, I would pick up his lunch. I just wanted to say to my wife I bought the lunch of our “Future president and world class successful businessman that couldn’t get home if it cost a quarter to go around the world.” David Wright, the president of the group bought his lunch and I didn’t get bragging rights on it. David is a good guy. I am thinking if he knew what this fellow was about he wouldn’t have let him speak at the meeting.

Now there is a nice way to say things and a not nice way to say things and this guy was a jerk when you got him off in a corner one on one. If I was asking you to pick up my lunch I promise I will talk very politely and not insult your group or organization.

I met Zig Ziglar several times, he knew my father in law, they had worked at the same company. Zig was the real thing. Great guy, lived what he taught. Glad I met him. Kept me from souring on “gurus.” My father in law has a nice personal letter from him that is a prized possession of my father in law.

Clement Stone I heard could be a bit of a jerk at times, but his wife got brain fever while doing missionary work and he stood by her in a way that makes legends. I knew the woman that arranged his travel in Tennessee and asked her what he was really like. She said, “He has his moods, if he thinks you aren’t paying attention to him or following his instructions he can get pretty sharp with you, but the man takes care of his wife to the max. She is pretty childlike now and he cares for her like his life depended on it, takes her everywhere, has the patience of Job with her. The man is honest as the day is long, gives millions to children’s charities, he has a lot on him, I can see why he might bark, but he doesn’t bite. He tips well, I like a person that tips well, it says a lot about them.” I felt good about Clement Stone after that.

I went to Atlanta once for a company’s national meeting. I was friends with a couple of company made millionaires. (I am not financially rich anymore, but I am working my way back, isn’t it interesting to see how people treat you when you lose your money? It is like they are afraid that hard times will rub off on them)

So I go with my friends to see the keynote speaker backstage, I later sit at a table next to his table where I can hear everyone talk.

This man was a best selling author. On the cover of a magazine at the time that 90% of you would probably know the name of. Top manager, I think he was the CEO of the business media company he worked in.

The only thing on his mind was selling his book he was pushing.

I bet you would know him if I mentioned either his name or his top book. He has two on Amazon with five star reviews and a program with a journal. His latest book is in the Amazon top 1,000 books and in the top 30 in one of the management and leadership categories.

I heard he traded to get his professional reviews. He didn’t get them from being nice, I don’t think he knows how. How do these people make it to the top being jerks? I decided that they buttered up the people they thought that mattered and the rest they spit out like unpopped popcorn kernels.

He was rude, didn’t answer any questions, had a beauty pageant smile frozen on his face, he could smile while being rude. A friend of mine told me, “he is a jerk, he tried to change the contract with our company for his speaking engagement several times, he threatened to back out at the last minute if we didn’t give him a second session where he could just talk about his book.”

I wish I hadn’t bought his book after I met him and he made crude jokes as I tried to talk with him, but I already had.

Angela Chrysler, that married into the Chrysler automotive family and her father worked with Lee Iaccoca, real thing. Met her several times and she is sweet, has all the time in the world for anyone that has anything to do with her company. Took it over when her dad died. She is so nice that I figured the business world would chew her up and spit her out, but no, she is smart. No doubt watched her dad in business. She covers her bases and thinks two steps ahead. If she told me my loving wife was going to shoot me I would have to buy a bullet proof vest. She is on facebook. She is about to take her company across the billion dollar a year sales threshold and she posts pictures of her and her children making snacks for Halloween, with their pets, trick or treating, family stuff, much like my wife does and my wife isn’t taking any company over a billion. Very little business is on Angela’s facebook page, just positive and motivation stuff and her family. She is the real thing.

Knew a top salesman for a company. He actually cried with a family that had lost a daughter not too long before. They were there for a business deal representing their company. When they left he laughed and said, “Another batch of satisfied suckers.”

I had looked at that man as a role model, but not any longer.

I could go on and on.

Do the role models and gurus lie and fake it and are just down right jerks?

A lot fake it and are jerks in my opinion. I would say most, but that just makes the ones that don’t and are nice, truthful and care more valuable. Don’t let it make you critical and a skeptic. It is like eating at a buffet, take what works for you and leave the rest.

There are some really sincere people out there in leadership roles. There are people that really want you to succeed. I had a downline person in MLM that I gave a millionaire mlm’ers number to talk to about building their business. My friend I found out was calling him after 9 pm every night. I said, “You shouldn’t be bothering him that late at night.” My downline friend said, “Oh, that is when he told me to call, he puts his children to bed every night and tucks them in, he says he is free after 9…”

You have to love people like that.

I have a paypal account and I get payments through it, but can you make a $2k, $12k, even a $15k pay button and they process that?

Can the average person even charge it to their credit card? Or is there a limit on single purchases like on my debit card. No matter how much I have in it I can’t make over a $1,500 single payment.

That is what I am getting at. I suppose they could write a check and I could edeposit a scan of it or they could just mail it.

You want someone to be able to quickly pay without difficulty when making a purchase, or they may get second thoughts.

I have heard some paypal horror stories, but at my level I have never had a problem. I like their debt card where you can spend directly from your account.

I read where a im’er was suggesting you sweep your money out daily so you won’t get caught with money trapped if they decide to lock you out.

Tell you what, I will make a $15k paypal button and several of you can try it to see if it works… 😉

    Thanks,

    Ok, semi-serious here.

The Little Red Hen a Golden Book.

Raised all of my children on The Little Red Hen. You can get it used on Amazon for a dime plus tax and shipping.

They all have careers. The sons are sub contractors. One daughter is becoming a counselor and will have her own business. I messed up with the youngest and she has a job in the medical field.

    If you don’t like that
The Science of Getting Rich By Wallace Wattles. Worked for Rhonda Byrne and yes, Napoleon Hill.
It is so obvious you may need someone to explain it or you will miss the 52 principles it contains. I did the first time. Ask and I will send my list.

Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, get a copy of the early text. Worked for Bob Proctor and millions of others

Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris, he has later revised copies, so check that the references are up to date. Recommended by Seth Goddin (and me).

The Holy Bible KJV. Worked for John D Rockefeller and scores of others.
If you read it as a religious work, you will learn about religion.
If you read it is a wealth book, you will learn about wealth.
Andrew Carnegie quoted it. Used it’s themes in The Gospel of Wealth he wrote.

Believe it or not, How to win friends and influence people, by Dale Carnegie
No matter where you go, for everything from car care to health care you need people.
Everything you want is controlled or owned by someone else or you would have it.
A lot of millionaires base their success on How to win friends and influence people. Robert Fason recommends it.

The Richest Man in Babylon by George Clason. A favorite of John F Kennedy I hear.

The Master Key System by Charles Hannel, get a copy of the original text, worked for Bill Gates. He carried it around in High School when the other kids read comic books.

How to get rich in spite of yourself by Louis Grafe. Hard to find. Was the book that turned my life around.

Secret of the ages by Robert Collier. It was in more homes than the bible at one time they claimed. I doubt it, but he knew how to sell books.

The game of life and how to play it by Florence Scovel Shinn. Tom Watson of IBM recommended it.

That should keep one busy for a lifetime reading and rereading them.

However, I don’t know much more than what I told you. I can ask my brother, that is his big thing.
He has papers and stuff related to the family from around the world.

He gave me a sword once, I asked him if it had anything to do with the family and he said no, the one I got does, but I thought that one looked nice.

I told him now it has to do with the family, it is the sword my brother gave me.

Bruce, they were useless past wiring money. ACH transfer.

They wanted to set me up with an expensive merchant account and then couldn’t agree on the amount that I could receive in one payment.

I am thinking wiring is one way, but I have countries I send money to that I can’t send over $800 a day.

    thanks,

I totally agree Bruce. There is the longest word in the bible Maher-shalal-hash-baz. It means hastening after the spoil speeds the prey.
When you are chasing people for their money, they run. Surprise!

When you are trying to help people they stand still.

The goal is not exactly getting rich again.

It is to help so many people that I am compensated richly.

    or something like that,

Here is how I do squeeze pages. Not saying it is right, but maybe it isn’t too wrong.

Get Response is my current email autoresponder. You can make all the squeeze pages you want with them, themes, templates, etc.
So I make the squeeze page with them, but I DON’T send people there with my offers.
I make a page on my website that is not in the navigation that I send people to, then I redirect them to the squeeze page from there. It barely even blinks as they go there.

Here is why. If I change autoresponders all of those offers will go to an account that doesn’t exist. This way they still come to me and I can send them anywhere I want.

I can change offers, do a lot of changes and I have control. Split test at this point and send them to different squeeze pages.

It is just how I do it.

I currently have two “Coaches” they cover different areas of my life/business.

You wouldn’t go to a doctor to have your tooth pulled or a dentist for tax information.

I think as long as they cover different areas you are ok.

Just think how confused you would be if you went to a half dozen doctors with your symptoms.

As a Strategic Life Coach, I have to have at least one coach or I am a hypocrite.

Not every professional you work with has to be called a coach.

So, as many as you need to cover all of your bases, but don’t overlap.

    best,

This is long and rambling, if you don’t like long and rambling, then this is your cue to pass…

You open yourself up to criticism and nay-sayers when you make your goals public, but I am not concerned about that like I used to be.

I am going to lay it out there, with a little explanation.
I feel I have to explain it a little or people will just think I am conceited or have a ridiculous opinion of what I can do or even that I worship money.

I am going to tell you things I haven’t told my wife.

Before anyone throws stones, let me preface this by asking you that are reading this a question…
How many people do you want to help in this world? One? A hundred? Just enough to pay the bills?

My grandfather said, “Money can do a lot of good in the hands of a good person. There is never enough good done, so there is never enough money.”-Truman Hogue

I have heard him say it a hundred times. He died in 1984 and I can still hear him say it.

That belief and mindset drove him to wealth and enabled him to help a lot of people, a lot of people.

One day I told him I wanted to be that good person he talked about, the person he was.

What do I want from this group, community, project?
I don’t want to just take, I want to give too, but since you asked.

I want to learn how to help more people, a lot more people.
I want the satisfaction of knowing I did.
I want my retirement, including family, Africa and World projects funded from what I do with what I learn.
I want to be exposed to like minded people that by daily association keep me interested, active and focused on my goals.
I want a source of information and help that I can turn to when I am stuck.
I want to learn from people that are succeeding so I don’t waste too much time reinventing the wheel.

I want to make a million dollar a year internet product/coaching business.
That may not be within your ability to believe, but it is within mine.

When I lost my job twenty years ago I started my own business and I sold over $300,000 in candy, potato chips, cookies, crackers and food out of a two car garage the first year. Not all profit, but not bad. My own mother had said, Scott you are crazy thinking you are going to feed your family selling cookies, do you think you are the Girl Scouts? The next year I was the Keebler food distributor for middle Tennessee and I was making more than enough just off the cookies to feed my family.

I have paid off well over a half million dollars in debt since then. After the first half million, I don’t count it like I used to.

I have had one wife die and of no fault of her own leave me with crushing medical debts, a drunk driver hit my current wife and my daughter nearly killing them, my wife now won’t have another pain free day in her life short of a miracle, after a year she got to where she could walk some. After plastic surgery, a lot of counseling and our help with her going back to school for a career in medicine, the daughter is doing well, but still needs help with the children, especially the girl with medical problems. I actually think all of my daughter’s medical treatment and the help she got made her want to work in medicine to help others. I have a granddaughter born with birth defects. I started six orphanage centers in Africa and they still count on me and no matter what I try I can’t find anyone that says they want to take that responsibility off my hands. I have a great nephew that has Down’s syndrome and I want him to have everything he needs.

I could go on all day, but no one would want to read it.

I have to dream big. Little dreams won’t pay the bills around here.

If you aim for the stars, you may not reach them, but you won’t come back with a handful of mud.

What if it takes five years? That beats never.

What if I never get past a half a million a year?
Beats just paying the light bill.

I know a woman that had two children and a run away husband. She once struggled to pay the bills, now she is a millionaire.

She said, “Once your obsession is as big as your goal you can have it.”

I am working on my obsession and looking for people that want to work together on theirs with me and let Sean shine us a light to walk by.

I was looking for something that would do what this community can do when I read the offer. If that isn’t providence it sure is convenient.

You asked what do I want from this community, I want this community to be the launching pad for a million dollar a year business.

With the number of people here, why not a number of million dollar a year businesses?

    Fear Reversal

    Claire,
I know about the fear of failure. It has been a close companion of mine.
I turn it around sometimes. Often it is easier and more useful to redirect an emotion than to eliminate it.

I think about and fear what it would mean if I died with my purpose unfulfilled. Not fearing what others might think or the short term outcome, but what if I lived my life and didn’t do the things I dreamed of doing. The things I was meant to do.

When I was a child I had a jar where I put my money from chores I did or money given to me for my birthday and such.

I would go to town and spend some of that money about every week or two when I could go with someone going to town.

I would buy a whistle or a sponge ball or a jump rope or a comic book or some other trinket. I had a little compass I carried everywhere, like I was going to be lost in the jungle at the age of nine and need it.

Sometimes I would be happy with what I had spent my money on and sometimes I would be sad. I soon figured out that candy seldom made it home and I quit buying it. It wasn’t worth the money I spent on it when it was gone and I had nothing to show for it.

Sometimes I wanted my money back, I had spent it poorly.

I know now that there are more days behind me than ahead of me here.

I think of my jar with the money and realize that I am spending my days like that money. Sometimes I am happy with what I spent the day on and sometimes I am not.

I have a jar with a little money in it on my desk to remind me I am spending a day remaining of my life every 24 hours and soon they will all be gone…

and then I am not afraid to act, I am afraid not to act on my dreams and the important things.

Thinking about that jar has got me up in the night more than once to work on something or up before anyone else here is out of bed.

What if it wasn’t failure, but the fear of letting your chances all slip by you feared?

    best,
    Scott Hogue CChH
