Good luck Bruce, we are some kin to the Hoag’s.
My brother is a bit of an amateur genealogist and he would know.

He told me the one about the man that paid $500 to find out who he was kin to and then offered to pay $1,000 to cover it up.
    I am sure it wasn’t Hoag’s.

There are Hogg’s, Hogue’s, Hough’s, Hoag’s, so many it is a wonder we don’t rule the world.

Not making money makes me a bit nervous and motivates me to keep working. Making money is what is dangerous for me.

I associate activity with making money and quitting as a way to ensure you will fail.

Napoleon Hill said one of the greatest qualities for success was the trait of turning on more determination when you were not getting results instead of quitting. He noticed it first in Edison, then other successful people.

Yes, I am a Napoleon Hill fan. Pay more attention to what he said than his life.

Do as I say, not as I do…

Who said retirement can’t be fun? 😀

I plan on doing some of the things I am doing as long as I live or can, but others I would quit today if I could.

The problem now is most of the money would stop if I quit them and it would be less than I want to live on and fund my Church charities with.

After a few family and personal tragedies, I am not rich anymore, financially comfortable, but not financially rich anymore.

After the tragedies I realize that you don’t know how much money you will need.

You don’t know when a drunk driver will hit your family and spend over half a million of your money over a 2 second car wreck. I didn’t know life flights are $30,000 each and there is no volume discount. You don’t know when a surgeon will have a bad day and you can’t work for over a year or a family member will come down with cancer and the uncovered expenses are hundreds of thousands. You don’t know how much money your grandchild with a birth defect will need or your widowed mother will need for medical care. You don’t know when an insurance company will cancel you or say you reached your lifetime benefit cap.

They are worth so much more than the money, but if I hadn’t had the money, they would have got the best care charity could provide, not the best care money could provide and that can be a life and death difference.

So I am working on being rich again.

Some things I would do until I can’t, but I would retire the others and raise the grandchildren and call it playing with them.

I keep hearing I am not playing enough Minecraft… I would fix that.

Jan, get response uses Jing to make a screen video to show you how to do something when you live chat them and ask how to do something. Then they send it to you. Pretty cool!

I want all of my instruction manuals to come in coloring book format.

Weebly, I hate wordpress, it goes way back, they say I need therapy for it. Changing to something else was cheaper and actually worked to get sites up.

Hated godaddy. A month after I left I got an email from support that my problem had been that although I did use a browser they supported, I had a newer version than worked with their page builder. A little too little and a little too late.

Fatcow lost my website and denied I ever had one, sent them a screen saved shot and they said well, we might be wrong. That was the extent of their technical support.

Weeebly can be a bit strange. Before you publish you should always click on another frame than you just edited, if not you may lose your changes.
They also change their interface often because they know you want to have to learn how to do some simple thing all over again.

Surprisingly, your result may not look just like what you published. Fonts, spacing, etc, but at least it publishes.
So, it is the best of what I have worked with. You can open an html box and do your code thing. They link well to my Amazon Cloud services for files. They have tons of templates, you simply pick a theme and click on it to make a blog. They have contact forms you can do a moderate amount of customizing with.

my personal opinion based on my experience,
No wordpress plugins were harmed in this post…

    The client?

You can have a business without me (Zig Ziglar died and his business goes on)
You can have a business without marketing (Probably not much, but people keep contacting me about a business I shut down years ago)
You don’t have to have skills (Heck, there are frauds that don’t even try)

But without a client or customer you have no business.

In fact, your client determines the very nature of your business.

Just how I see it, your mileage may vary,

I started my hypnosis practice as a traveling hypnotist, I used other people’s offices and had days in different towns. I too had taken some courses to get certified after years of working with people mostly free and through Church. So I copied my certificates and put them in page protectors and in a 3 ring binder and took them with me and no one ever asked to see them. Never.

Then I thought I should try to show them to the clients and they weren’t interested.

I didn’t even put them up in my office.

The one thing people really want to know is “Can you help me?”

Your best certification is word of mouth that you helped someone.

Legally, you may run up on some odd problems, I live in Tennessee and some years ago they took Pastoral counseling away from Pastors, no joke.
You have to have the state’s degree and certification to do Pastoral counseling in Tennessee now. Terrible problem. Divorce and Drug problems have gone right up since then, pastors are afraid to talk to people. There are now many more Non-Pastor Pastoral counselors in Tennessee than Pastors that are Pastoral counselors.

They tried to quash the Life Coaches here too, but that didn’t get any traction and we are safe so far. They wrote a warning letter in 2009 to the effect we hear you are talking to people and it is helping them so obviously you are practicing medicine without a license… but the state legislature wouldn’t take it up.

Most of my hypnosis training is in Hypno-Therapy, but in Tennessee I can’t use the word Therapy. Hypnotist is ok, but therapy is forbidden. If I cross the line into Alabama I can say I am a hypnotherapist, but I can’t work in schools. I don’t think Kentucky cares what I call myself, but they have a self employment tax and local employment taxes, so you have to deal with that or avoid them.

The AHA is a good resource for learning the laws and regulations in your state for Hypnotists. I have never heard of anyone having a problem working on the phone or online across state lines, but don’t quote me on that being the law. Nevada has been about the worst state (and that is where we were holding the hypnosis conventions!) and has taken several hypnotist to court, but they counter sued the psychologists and I think it all settled out. Someone realized stage hypnotists were everywhere and the convention brought in money.

All because one person wanted to talk to another about their problems.
I will get off my soap box now.

I am not a lawyer, but I have managed to stay out of jail…

On Windows 10 I use Flashback express for screen capture, it is free. You are limited on what formats it will export to in the free version, but that doesn’t bother me since I use Total Video Recorder to do some of my editing and can convert it to about any format.

Total Video Recorder is also a basic audio editor.

Of course Audacity is the gold standard, free and open source audio recorder/editor.

    Different software for different folks…

There are always at least two sides to this. If someone came to me saying they had sold $0 online I would suggest they sell something, anything on Craigslist and then they couldn’t say that anymore and have that negative boat anchor around their neck 😉

Of course there are the steps, methods and techniques, but really this is largely mental.

Believe you can do it and you are tremendously more likely to do it.

I have this picture somewhere that says something to the effect, “While others were telling me how impossible it was, I found I achieved a great deal of success by simply putting one foot in front of the other and repeating…” It is a desert sand scene with foot prints across the scene.

Wishing you plenty of sand in your shoes to prove you made progress,

A few years back, ok, it was probably longer than that, somehow I got on this woman’s email list. She would send out a daily email with a few positive notes and maybe some not so terrible news and then a list of things she thought might interest me. None were her products. I emailed her just to see if she would respond and she did.

She didn’t have a website. She didn’t make any products. She had about 6 or 8 lists, men’s list, women’s list, cat owner list, dog owner list, etc. She just did affiliate marketing.

She didn’t quote dollars, but she did mention daily sales on a list and I am betting this woman made more money than 90% of the people on the internet.

All she was out was her email account.

I am not on her list anymore or she quit. Maybe she bumped me off because I didn’t buy.

So, it is possible to make decent if not good money with little investment. I tried to get my great niece to do this, but she never did.
I told her she was on the internet and facebook all day, she might as well make money at it.

Good answers. I am on Linkedin and it looks like it would be good for something, but I am struggling figuring it out.

I will make a to do note on Sean’s protocol.

Jan thanks, we sometimes forget that as coaches we can have business clients. I signed up for a coaching placement service, but they had ridiculous expectations.

They didn’t realize Tennessee was such a wide state and wanted me to be on one end in the morning and the other in the afternoon!

Then they wanted me to travel to New York on my dime for a few hours at my local rate.

I kind of put business coaching on the back burner after dealing with them.

I am still trying to figure out facebook. I ran a number of ads for a local business of mine and used zip codes to get them to run locally and the vast majority of my likes are coming from foreign countries.

I am a Strategic Life Coach. I see people in “real life.”

I have a website I promote offline with business cards, ads, meetings, free clinics and then I get sign ups for free sessions from the website.

I have them fill out paperwork so I can know what they need, their circumstances and so on before I have the session.

That way I can think ahead and have a plan. I call it cheating because it almost guarantees a good session.

I promise a few things at the first of the session.

I future pace them into what it would be like if they achieved their goals. I ask them if they are committed and how much on a scale of 1-10.

If they are not at 10 I ask them what it would take to make it a 10 and keep it there. If they are at 10 I ask them what it would take to keep them there.

I go over how I kept my promises from the first of the session.

I offer them a package and a promise.

If they hesitate I use the information I got when I asked them what it would take to make this a 10 and keep it there.

When they sign up and if I get them this far they usually do, then I use my super secret techniques on them…. 😉

I just personally think that live presentations at a set time are too restrictive. I won’t usually watch them. If it does make a big difference then I will do them, but not if you can just do an on demand recorded one and get as good or even better results.

I think much of the point on the internet is to use technology to not have to work over and over again.

I haven’t had a job in 20 years. I work of course, but not in a job. I think it is funny that my friends and much of my family think I am retired. “Scott doesn’t have a job, he can do it…”

So in my case my time is more flexible. My friends and most of my family don’t know that I may be doing taxes at midnight or updating a website with a new offer before everyone is out of bed in the morning. On the other hand, I can work it out so I am free to pick up my grandson from school or take the grandchildren to a doctor when needed. The rest of the family are paid by the hour and for certain hours. I am paid for results no matter how I get them.

Most of my businesses are offline, but work is work. If anything, I have more flexibility in my online business. I can change a website at 1 am, but I can’t work in my food service business when clients are closed and I am not likely to book a coaching client for 1 am their local time.

I would say like most businesses, that you work hard at first and a lot of hours to start it and then the maintenance is much easier.

Keep an eye on productivity and efficiency. If you don’t watch it you get caught up in busy work. Kind of like how clutter fills the house if you don’t spring clean from time to time.

I stop sometimes and ask if what I am doing has a real pay back, will it advance my goals or is it just busy work?

    Like writing this right now…

    best,

I didn’t even make a dollar, I think it was 38 cents or something. I had written an Amazon Kindle book.

I had sold physical merchandise before and made hundreds of dollars, but the first intellectual property I think I made something like 38 cents on during the first pay period.

Later I figured out how to promote the book and did much better, but “the put it on Amazon and they will come” model didn’t work for me.

I also found that if I quit promoting the book my sales would drop off. Makes sense now, so the jumpstart method didn’t work either.

I found out that set it and forget it only applied to slow cookers!

I appreciate your reply, but I took it Sean actually wants us to form groups for accountability and sharing.

Did I misread his post on this topic?

And maybe I wasn’t clear, but I am suggesting we go back to square one and start together with Sean, so I don’t consider this advanced. Actually it is usually in the basics that we find the most room for improvement.

I don’t see this as a corner outside of the platform, but just another place to discuss the lessons in Sean’s platform.

Throw in a little accountability and a pinch of encouragement.

My fault for not being clear.

    No offence taken.

Each to their own path and best wishes,

Sean teaches something I and others have been saying for years, but I don’t hear anyone but Sean teaching it in IM.

Find your purpose. Figure out how you can help people in your personal way. Discover your drive, your desire to solve a problem or area of problems. If you aren’t passionate about what you do, you will find it hard to stick to it. If you aren’t helping the world by helping people, then there will be no long term success in what you do.

If you have little knowledge in that area, realize your interest in that area is truly valuable.

This is a people business, even though through the internet it isn’t face to face. The Chinese say a man without a smile shouldn’t open a shop. You have to find the work where your “Smile” is.

When I went to Africa as a missionary, I had no super, special missionary training, but I did more good the first day than 500 people that said it couldn’t be done. Start where you are and just pitch in.

In 12 step programs they want you to believe in a power greater than you and outside of you. The reason is, when you come up on a problem greater than your strength and personal resources, if you have access to a higher power you still have hope and a path to victory.

It isn’t popular to say it, but there is a spiritual element to success and a truly happy life. It is through helping others, charity, contribution and giving of ourselves that gives our life meaning and provides our greatest happiness.

When I wonder and doubt I know what I am doing, since I believe we all have a purpose and are intended to help people, I still believe God knows what He is doing.

If you are really helping people, then you can’t fail. Help people first and the money and ways to grow will come later, but if the foundation isn’t helping people, then anything you do is unsustainable.

Search your heart. Find the place you can help people. Then examine what you are doing. Does this advance you in helping people in your personal way? If so proceed without fear. If not back up and get back on that path. That is your test and compass.

Don’t listen to critics. Don’t expect overnight progress. Just move ahead and in time you will be surprised at how far you have traveled.

I never did anything to help someone that I ever regretted. When you help others you know you are on the right track.

Carol, I see you also posted about udemy in another post. I have been thinking about doing a free introductory course at udemy. Something with real value and some exercises. I am not sure about the terms of service, but I thought about linking to a website for more free downloadable content. It seems something like that more or less is what you did. Can you elaborate?

I was looking at it as a traffic source and then bread crumb them to a subscription gift, all while doing a little good in the world.

    Thanks,

Brian, don’t know if this qualifies, but I built my hypnosis business by promoting my website and the website gave useful information, had recorded samples, promoted me and offered a way to sign up for a free session.

So I ran ads in penny shopers, local papers, spoke at meetings, held free clinics and passed out many business cards that invited people to the website.

These things performed better than bing or google ads.

I could run a shopper ad for about $15 and have a return of $400-$500. Online ads didn’t come close. Keywords like weight loss and stop smoking were expensive.

People seemed more at ease according to their accounts after going online hearing my voice, hearing me explain what I do and how I do it, seeing the free offer and entering in their information in a simple form instead of having to make a call.

There is an old saying in hypnosis that the first thing you want to do is convince the prospective client you aren’t weird. My website and sample recordings put people at ease.

Maybe something here you can make apply to you.

Good point, I want to help as many as possible too. We often get caught up in commodity pricing and thinking. I have seen results where raising a price actually sold more of an item, which meant more people benefited. It depends on the circumstances. Also, it takes money to broadcast your message. You can build a bigger megaphone with a little more money. On the other hand, we don’t want to price out people that could use our help. So I look at it like a ladder. The lower price items help them reach the higher ones, especially in financial courses.

The problem is I am not sure what to price each ladder rung…

Strategies you think up, for tactics you roll your sleeves up….

    In general terms:

Strategies are your grand plan. Think of them as your recipe to create what you want. Your “Power Point Presentation” to success.
    Strategies are composed of steps.

Tactics (from same root as tactile for touch in general or hands on) are the tasks that carry out your grand plan.
    Tactics are composed of tasks.

So you have thought work and physical work.

I could beat a dead horse more, but it is getting late in the day for beating dead horses.

(Beating a dead horse is a tactic, figuring out what to do when it doesn’t help you reach your goals is strategic thinking)

No real horses were hurt in this illustration,

You are going to laugh at me (go ahead, I can’t hear it) but I use edublogs pro for $15 a quarter.

My membership is basically a blog with content and links to my Amazon cloud storage.

You can password protect the pro version (yes $15)

It has a forum page or section.

    Dozens of themes.

I put the new month’s password into my thank you section on the receipt.

When I get really big…. I guess I will out grow it.

I probably do need to do more work on competitors. I am not really sure who to consider a competitor in a way, I do some pretty different things.

But the ones that I have looked at are all over the place. From $7 and $27, $97 to $6,000 and $24,000.

Of course we are talking about different products, downloads, memberships, year of coaching, but it still doesn’t fit with rhyme or reason.

I have seen items sold at auction on ebay to help determine demand and price, but this isn’t a widget exactly.

To be more clear, or at least attempt.
Sean recently offered a Platform program. I am trying to get my head around it. I can see it looks a lot like a membership, but maybe it acts more like a youtube or a facebook.

So when does a membership become a platform and when does a platform become different than a membership?

Maybe a platform is like a membership that is the go to place for the topic. When it rises above the rest it becomes a platform for the topic.

It may be just me, but I went into an endless loop thinking on it.

Lots of good points. I hate the live webinars myself that people try to get me to attend. They are usually during business hours or some time that is really inconvenient. Chet Holmes daughter that took over his business has mid day webinars with no replay, so I really don’t know what she does, I am usually seeing clients or on the road, but I wondered if there was a reason for the way she did it. Did the live webinar appear to have more value?

I am thinking an ad where you can go directly to the webinar is pretty powerful.

Keep your comments coming and I will continue to think on it.

    Thanks,

Well, I see more questions here and good questions, so I guess I need to answer them so I can get answers…

Melody raised a good point, what do I count as an effective action.

We sort of assume that when someone subscribes that they are a good and interested subscriber since they subscribed to my topic.
On the other hand, we do get a lot of free stuff collectors.

What I really was thinking was, if I offer an absolutely free mini course that you don’t even have to sign up for and then give them an offer to subscribe for to continue, those people that did would be pre qualified as interested to some extent. Sort of like Sean says that when a person reads an entire Ezine article and then clicks they are a more valuable subscriber since they know more about who Sean is, what he does and his style of teaching.

I like the challenge idea, Don.

Robert makes me think of the free chapter book offer.

    thanks,

I have this idea about product launches I am going to try as I build this funnel.

I will be sending them material, content and explaining what I do to promote my big ticket product.

Then I will do a personal launch. I won’t let them buy the product and say so, until they have been exposed to what I do, how it works and so on, then I will do a personal launch for them.

“Over the last 27 days I have sent you xyz and you see how I use xyz to help people remove seeds from strawberries 😉 ….
now that I think you understand what is possible and the commitment you must make …. I am offering you my abc program for the next three days…. I only want to work with serious people that I know I can help….

    Something like that,

    Hello all!

I am Scott Hogue, I am a Strategic Life Coach and with my wife I own several offline small businesses. For years I operated a Christian Hypnosis practice, taking in anything pretty much that came through the door. The Christians weren’t happy with the hypnosis part of my title and the non-Christians weren’t happy with the Christian part and that made building a practice difficult in the beginning, so in time I fell back to promoting myself as a Strategic Life Coach based on my years in management at Fortune 500 companies, still using my bag of tricks I have picked up over the years.

I build bridges from people to the things they want in life. In over 40 years of practice in one form or another I have seen a lot and worked with a lot of people overcoming problems. Like Bob Proctor says, you don’t have to be a genius to get good at something after 40 years.

My goal here is to take my offline practice online in a variety of ways. To offer programs and coaching for a variety of issues and arenas. Running an office practice limits you in so many ways that an online presence overcomes. That way I can help many more people and create a little residual income for my sweetheart’s and my own retirement years.

If I have an unforgivable flaw, it is I hate wordpress. I often threaten to sell I hate wordpress bumper stickers.

Hope we all have a long and blest relationship here,
    Scott Hogue CChH

Thanks for the responses. To offer more info per the questions and discussion. I was thinking of offering a free newsletter as a subscriber magnet with monthly helpful info and a weekly or bi weekly premium newsletter possibly that would contain a lot of my membership info for the month. Sort of give them the skinny and direct them to the membership if they wanted more detailed info and guidance.

It would be nice to have subscribers actually pay for something that had a little marketing to them mixed in

    and

We get so used to plain emails, I was thinking a newsletter with frames and a few images might get more attention, appear more valuable.
