And my own opinion is, once you get interrupted x times in a day (different for each person) you hit a personal limit where you can NEVER get back on task . . .
and keep in mind, most strong work is deep work . . .
and deep work . . .once interrupted, often CANNOT be gotten back the same day!
so not only do interruptions hurt when you are doing routine work . .
but if you are doing deep work, or work in a “flow” – even one interruption can kill productivity for the DAY
That’s why I do my deep work before my wife awakes or at the coffee shop.
Even the sound of a sneeze can push me off target.
But if it happens at a coffeeshop – it’s easy to ignore, it’s background noise, I’m not monitoring the world for any cares, there’s no urgency or responsibility to say ” bless you” and start a conversation . .
Protect your deep time and your flow time!
Schedule it, work your schedule for it!
You only get 1-3 or 4 chances per day, then you need to sleep to reset

the thing is, someone starting out doesnt’ need that many tools
all they really need is hosting, an AR and the ability to make word docs, pdfs, that kind of thing.
Folks don’t need much to start (I didn’t and could do it all over again with just those tools to start)

My one bit of advice on this:
whether you have 3 parts to your business, 5, or 7 . . .
remember . . don’t obsess over any one to the exclusion of others . . .and don’t get bogged down feeling like you have to do all 5 each day!

Tina, great thoughts . . .
I submit that I think that each of us has to determine what works for us, in getting work done around family.
You might get more work done in 1 hour behind a closed door or at the coffeeshop than 14 sitting in the hustle and bustle of home.
You might be better off NOT turning the computer on during “family time” and instead relax with the family, but then set aside an hour or 2 a day when you are “off limits”
By having the boundary, your time is respected.
But if your family sees you working 14 hours a day and anytime they ask you something, you are distracted, 2 things occur:
1) they thing your work is consuming you
2) you are not getting much done with all the distraction.You might be able to get MORE done in an hour of scarcity time before they wake up or after they go to bed, or during an hour of locked door office time than in 14 of your current hours.
And please, no one take this to mean to work behind a locked door for hours on end.
Set reasonable boundaries, don’t be distracted with work when spending time with family, and they’ll respect your hour o2 behind closed doors.

If you are only doing it for the money, then you have to be doing something that makes money . . .
A business is a business . . a coffeeshop sells coffee
an oil change shops sells oil changes
a coach sells coaching
So one thing you need is to package what you do into something folks can BUY then focus on getting folks to the buyer page and go from there . . .
if you are doing things that DON’T lead to your goal . . . anything that doesn’t lead to it . . anything outside of:
create squeeze page
create products
write a daily email
tell everyone possible about your squeeze pageIf you are doing things outside of that and hoping they’ll give you the same results . . . they won’t!
the whole idea here is to encourage you and encourage others and for others to encourage each other – to do THOSE steps and share your work to help you stay motivated to stay on track and do those 4 steps!

Folks, I thought I’d share my own slideshare page here: https://www.slideshare.net/seanmize/presentations
I have generally used it in the past just for another way to “get content out there” but have anecdotally seen leads come in through there . . and keep in mind, it’s not something I regularly update. . .
If I WERE to regularly update it and keep it part of my active daily activity, it would likely show well in google, and drive good leads as well.
Slideshare is also a great way to share presentations without having to count on recipients having the right software to view them . .

when you do the things necessary to build a list, you will get a list
you’ve gotten subscribers before, that is a list
you have had a list
it was just a small list
to get to the next level, you grow the list bigger
but you CAN build a list
you just struggle with building a list like other people struggle with other things
but you CAN build a list, IF you do the steps to build a list
ok, if anyone else reads this and thinks I’m being tough on Bruce . .
ask yourself what I could say to you the same thing about . .
then commiserate with Bruce!

My advice:
do the part you know how to do
when you get to the part you don’t know how to do, often it just becomes obvious . . but until you do the first parts, you can’t see what you can’t see . .
It’s kind of like doing a jigsaw puzzle . .
sometimes you have to put the pieces together that are easy, then work around the edges and do the next round of pieces, and then the next round of pieces . . .
like doing a crossword puzzle or a sudoku . . you can’t do some words or guesses without doing the first ones.
Building your business is the same way – you don’t know how to do what’s next until you do what’s first.

The process I learned a few years ago – and have adapted a little – is The ONE Thing process
that Gary Keller and Jay Papasan teach in their Book – THe ONE Thing
It’s so powerful to me to ask myself, what is the one thing I can do today that will make everything else irrelevant or unimportant?
And of course this process nests . . . once you do that ONE THING – your day might be done, or you might have time to ask the question and do the NEXT THING . . .

I did one thing primarily at first to build my first list, maybe 100,000 subscribers generated this way, and that’s I wrote articles for ezinearticles and really pushed their system, figured out what it took to get to the top of their recommended lists, get to the top of their top authors list, and really pushed to get views . . .and it all paid off to the tune of close to about 100,000 subscribers . . . .
Then I shifted to using the Warrior Forum to generate leads . . .and generated maybe 50,000 buyer leads there . . . .same concept, I studied the format, determined what it took to get them to send me the most traffic, and did it.
Then when warrior forum and warrior plus split, since I had already built relationships and the bulk of the leads were coming in from the warrior plus side, I simply continued to use warrior plus to drive those new leads.
Bruce, to answer your question about where most of my leads come from now, there are 2 answers:
Where do the total volume come from?
Or where do the profitable ones come from?
And I’m scared to answer this because I am talking about things I used to do, and I find when I do that, people try to copy what I used to do, and it doesn’t work for them, and somehow they think it should . . . I don’t do the things I used to do because they don’t work as well now, so I do different things now.
But I’ll answer cause you asked.
Probably most of my profitable leads are warriorplus . . I get a lot of leads from buyer download pages, etc – but they haven’t been productive so far.
Also get leads from my old articles, dipping into quora lately.
I get leads from referrals and interviews.
Regarding what I tried before ezinearticles . . .mostly fake stuff (but I didn’t know it at the time) – I bought a lot of guarantee traffic, safe list traffic, safe emails, etc – just junk, junk, junk traffic.
And about 80 more article directories until I did the tests that ruled them all out and I went all-in with ezinearticles.com.
I did an $8000 google PPC test one time and about broke even in the long term – like months and months
and learned that cold traffic doesn’t convert as well as warm traffic (and since the average article marketing lead has read about 7 articles before opting in to my list, they are quite warm -and then after a few days on my list they are either hot or quit!~!!!
Bought tons of solo ads in the past, the only way that ever worked for me was sending that traffic directly to a wso, make it break even there, and get a buyer out of it instead of a subscribers.
Solo ad subscribers tend to be hard on an email server, because of 2 things:
1) because of their nature and why they got on my list . . . they are also on 100 other lists – so – they get used to unsubbing
2) and they are also on 100 lists so their open rate is really low
but once the solo ad market got more advanced, it’s hard to get anyone to mail a wso offer anymore, so I stopped doing that.
And way before that, Matt Garrett and I developed the ad swap model that evolved into the big solo ad market in the im niche . . and we did fairly well with that . . .
but every before that – and this I think is how I met Matt – I would write people with similar lists to mine and say, Hey, I think we have similar prospects on our lists, will you mail your list for me if I mail my list for you?
and many said yes, huge starter list for me.
But that is much, much harder these days since there has been so much commercialization of solo ads and adswaps since then (this is one case of starting something but once it took off, it was no good to me anymore)
Sorry this isn’t chronological, but I think you can surmise the order . . .
and there may be a few more sources I’m forgetting.
But a fair warning to anyone reading this: just because something works for me doesn’t mean it will work for you.
And just because something doesn’t work for me doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.
YOU have to do the hard work and find out where YOUR demographic and YOUR bleeding neck prospects are hanging out, and intercept them, just like I’ve done.

you are right, and that’s what I teach.
I taught in on last week’s coaching call.
YOu have to proactively SEARCH AND FIND the problems so that you can solve them.
It’s not easy, or more people would it.
It’s actually very hard work, and you have to dig very deep and usually talk with people personally to find out.

It really depends on whether or not your newsletter contains more value than your emails.
It should.
Most people don’t have the time to read a newsletter length email every day.
Besides, you can deal with a topic at a much deeper level in a newsletter.
And people are more likely to read it because it’s less frequent; unlike an email which may arrive daily.
So in a way, it’s the wrong question.
The right question is why do you send emails, and how would a newsletter deliver more or better value?
Bruce, I send emails because it allows me to communicate deeply with real people.
A newsletter wouldn’t necessarily deliver more value, but it might deliver a better perceived value.
For example, for a rich person, a Ferrari offers a higher perceived value, but it doesn’t get you from point a to point b any better than a Kia.
For a modest person, a Kia offers a higher perceived value because the payment is lower, not because it’s get you from point a to point b any better than Ferrari.

you’ve hit the nail on the head about content syndication – it takes time and is hard work!
I remember my first 3 months posting at ezinearticles.com and I had written maybe 450-500 articles in 3 months, and I was STILL only making about $6 hour for my time!
I seriously considered quitting.
It was January, my 6th month in, with about 1000 articles before I got to where my results where making me a living . . . at that time, I finally got to where I was getting maybe 500 subscribers a month, working 160 hours a month, and my first month at $5000+ in revenue . . .
But the articles weren’t the only thing, I was sending article traffic to my squeeze page, which got folks on my list, which got them my daily email, which led them to buy one of my 4-5 products I had created by January.

A newsletter is a great way to build rapport and increase perceived value.
I noticed someone said a newsletter is more work than an email.
Yes, but if it’s 4x as much work, and you do one once a week, in addition to a daily email, and it 4x your effect . . .would it be worth it?

that’s a good looking schedule!
One thing I’ve found is critical to building a successful business . . is thinking time.
Perry Marshall has a daily analog think time from 5 mins to 1 hour or so each day.
Richard Koch has a daily think time (he does it on his 10-20 mile bike rides after his hour or so of work in the morning.
Thinking is critical to this business . . .and thinking can’t be done well with a digital device or phone in hand or nearby.
This thinking time to which I refer is time totally allowing your mind to just think.
The first few sessions are rough.
but after a month of an hour a day of just thinking . . you begin to get clarity!

The very start of an online business is finding a problem you can solve for someone else . . .and the story about Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer is an example.
Google – solve the problem of search
Facebook – solve the problem of finding people
Houzz – solve the problem of going to 100 sites to find the one window idea you are looking for.
Uber . . .solved a problemInstapage . . .solved a problem
Mealime . . solved a problem
Weight Watchers . . solved a problemEVERY company that achieves anything significant solves a problem.
Even the coffee shop near your home, solves a problem.
If you aren’t solving a problem . . you don’t have a business.

Here’s the thing, I love the concept Scott is getting into . . . this idea that folks can come to YOU instead of going to the search engines . . . .
The thing is, you can’t BE a search engine for ALL THINGS like google and bing . . . but you CAN be the ONE PLACE where folks go in YOUR NICHE !
And the thing is, BECAUSE of the recent fragmentation of the market . . .I believe in nearly EVERY niche out there . . there is a place to have a site that really links to EVERYTHING better than ever before . . .
If someone could find the origin story for Houzz and post it . . it’s hugely inspirational, but it’s a story of how a woman was looking for home improvements and had to go to 100 sites to see everything . . .so she decided to start Houzz . . .and now businesses come to HER to advertise and get in HER site . . . because SHE aggregated it all . . .

I think the thing that distracts me the most is how much should I have in the first launch of a product (ie am I giving enough, does it need more etc) so then I start wasting time checking out competitor to see, but I am trying to trust my research and then my gut to just put it out 🙂

Ok, I gotta say this . . I feel like I have more tips and techniques and hacks than anyone . . I use them each day to do 160 hours of work in 20 !
But can’t for the life of me think of one unless someone asks . .
maybe ask me about something particular – how I can do it faster, whatever . . .
Ok, here’s one that comes to mind –
When I open my email, the first thing I do is tick off every email I don’t want to read . . . spam, lists I’m on, whatever, and just delete them.
Then I’m down to about 8 emails.
I read them, respond if necessary, they I can close email till the next email sitting

I think it’s one of the strongest threads this week because it really digs into a hidden source of very high quality traffic – and that’s why linkedin can charge so much for advertising there!
But as Don mentioned, you can write articles and get noticed there.
And as Bruce says, direct email is likely to be opened.
So if your niche lends itself to linkedin prospects . . . give it a second thought as part of your 5-prong strategy for engagement traffic.

I’ve discovered that when folks write out their income goal and then write out the products they’ll create to get there, then determine how many to sell each month to get there, it makes it so clear for them.
For example:
goal $100k in a year
monthly: $8300
so if your monthly membership is $83, you just need 100 members . . .
get 20 a month and you have $8300 a month – $100k in income – in just 5 months!

I think one real key is making those 3 hours count . . getting into a space where there are no interruptions, and then focusing relentlessly without allowing distractions . . .

to me shoestring training would teach:
How to set up a business on a shoestring . . .
it might specify that even a shoestring needs, say, $200 upfront and $50 a month, whatever.
Or you could give 2 options . . one cheapo with critical instructions to upgrade infrastructure (decent hosting, decent AR) ASAP
And show how to get traffic on a shoestring
how to create a squeeze page on a shoestring
how to create pages on a shoestring
how to advertise on a shoestring
how to create a download page on a shoestring
And so on . . .

there is now a direct link in the main menu near the top of the page
also, if you click the “forum” button above the new search box, top left, you’ll get directly to the forums.
Also, I’ve added a feature where you can see which posts you haven’t read, etc . . .

ok, I’ve added a search button to the front page, right above the ask anything posts . . .
also, you can click on forums right above the search box, and it gives a forum view that includes search . .

when I upgraded one component of the software, I overrode the signature settings . . .
you should now be able to go to your member page, then click on edit, and it’s the second box down
sorry for the inconvenience, hopefully these glitches will become fewer and further between!
