    Huh. Don’t ask!
2011 sounds about right. That would be the year I first typed “How can I make money online?” into the search engines.

I’m kind of a slow learner (also easily distracted), so it’s taken me that long to accept that there’s no push-button solution, learn what internet marketing truly is, and stay the course to completion. (In my defense, in the process, I’ve also been parenting 3 kids, as well as working my “day job”. And social work is not exactly the type of job you can just leave your job at the door at the day’s end.)

Now, how long have I wanted to work for myself, via the computer? Forever…First, it was writing, and thinking that I could earn enough money writing to just earn a nice living solely off that. (So far, I’ve been sadly deluded. What I’ve made writing freelance novels and magazine articles, and greeting cards I made and sold online, could pay about 2 months of my house note in total.)

Then I learned about the IM world.

For better or for worse, it’s become my passion to eventually make it work.

    Bruce,
Ha ha, nice one! 🙂 I think that’s true. We are all starting with the same great basic knowledge, at least (or the ability to obtain it).

I think paying for the forum actually helps weed out the fact that we are all serious about it. Like the old theory that a smoking cessation or similar support group will be more successful if you pay for it, because it will mean more to you.

Yes, I keep hearing that in order to make your clients/customers happy, you must “over-deliver”.
To do that, you must have not only knowledge, but passion for what you teach.
If you don’t believe in it, why would your customers?

Thanks for the reminder and hope you are healing up from your eye surgery.

    Hi Robert,
    Happy birthday!
I’m a big Dave Ramsey fan. I don’t want to get in any trouble for copyright infringement for reposting a page from his book, Total Money Makeover, here. (Great book, by the way…) So I just want to leave you a link here to the Google preview of the book, and encourage you to go in and read the first paragraph.

He’s talking about starting to invest, but as you’ll see, it can apply to “getting started” in general…with following your life’s passion and doing what you were meant to do:

    http://bit.ly/2zGzHK8

I personally find that very inspirational. No matter what your purpose, you are meant to discover it, and it’s never to late to do so.

    You’ll be in my prayers!

I like version B. Because otherwise, I wonder what love (as in the title of the ebook) has to do with money. The second one implies that the connection will be there.

It may be the theme you are using that’s doing it, or WordPress itself. Best way to be sure: download each image from Amazon to your computer, resize to the same desired size, and upload to your site. Also double-check the size of the images in WordPress once they are uploaded. Absolute best method: upload to your server (in a folder like images/ so it they would all look like images/imagename.jpg in your FTP program), all at the desired size; then add a direct link to them through your site when WordPress gives the option to link to them or upload. I found some of my images were acting strange when I uploaded them directly, but then they were ok when I used that method.

I spent the day away from the computer and with my beloved family.

Now that the kids are getting older and starting to scatter, the times I can just spend time with them all at once are precious and make holidays like Thanksgiving even more meaningful.

Hope everyone had a great day, whether you celebrate the holiday or not.

I plan to be in more than 1 niche eventually.

But I have to remember that acronym, F.O.C.U.S. —
    Follow One Course Until Successful

Meaning, in my case, that I get the entire funnel set up before moving on to my other niche.

I know for me, this is the only way to do it. Otherwise, I’ll dilute my efforts and never get any of them fully accomplished.

Once my 1st site is up and essentially a well-oiled machine that I’m maintaining, then I’ll start to think about building the next one.

I think you know you’re on the right path when you can break what you’re doing down to one part of a plan that has many parts.

If it’s going to benefit part of your overall plan, be that product creation or marketing, you’re on the right path.

I look at everything I’m doing online that way, nowadays. Helps me steer clear of the shiny objects I don’t need that don’t lend to the overall vision I’m working to achieve.

EDIT: I want to add something based on what I read from the other responses. I think even if you have to scrap a squeeze page, or rewrite pages, that doesn’t mean it’s a loss. It just means you’re that much closer to weeding everything else out to get to the end goal of completion. I’m a novel writer, though…I wrote a couple of fiction books before switching my focus to internet marketing. So I can attest to scrapping pages and even full chapters of a book midstream to rewrite them before eventually reaching the finished product.

The real question is, do you HAVE an end goal in mind?

Like the quote about Thomas Edison about trying 10,000 times before inventing the light bulb. He reportedly said, “This doesn’t mean I failed the other 9,999 times. I just discovered 9,999 other ways it will not work.”

I think I sort of answered this in another post, but here goes.

I hope to get, first of all, continued access to Sean’s expertise. I could probably just continue with the course I bought, because he really breaks it down, but there’s something about having continued instruction and feedback that I find useful.

Also, as what we do is a somewhat isolating and misunderstood experience, it’s helpful to interact with others who are doing it, which makes this forum invaluable. I used to frequent the Warrior Forum, for instance, in search of similar atmosphere. There, however, there are too many people asking stuff like “how do I get started?” and “how can I make $100 by tomorrow?” – that kind of stuff….along with people who are just there to spam their wares. (I actually think Warrior Forum is a shell of its former self these days…but, that’s another topic for another time.) I like that nobody here is going in blindly, precisely because we’ve all got Sean’s training. it’s a different playing field altogether, and the atmosphere reflects that.

Of course, the end goal is to strengthen my online business…bettering lives and hopefully creating some financial security in the process.

Well, my niche is chronic insomnia.

So, when Sean asks you to write out those questions like, “Imagine what it would feel like to ___” and “are you tired of ___ because ___” all I had to do was think back to my chronic insomnia days…

It was horrible. You’ll be able to read it in my ebook, but for 5 years, I struggled with it, and it got worse and worse.

To the point that I could no longer work effectively, enjoy my family, or get through each day.

So, to answer your question, how do I plan to change the world?

I can’t change the entire world, of course…But I CAN help people in the same boat by teaching them the strategies I’ve learned to restore their sleep.

I can give them tips to help get their life back (much to the relief of their bosses, spouses, children, and others who care about them).

In a very real way, overcoming bad insomnia is like getting your life back.

I am also very much a “go teach what you I learn” type of person…so once I conquer this project, I see myself expanding to also help others who want financial freedom, by teaching them what the process has taught me about starting a site, creating products, building an email list, etc.

All of this boils down to giving others hope…

This may not change the entire world, but it is possible to change the lives of many.

    Hi Amien,
Glad you’re back, and what a blessing from your family!

If you’ve already got your niche/product/funnel in mind, use the week to start with a blank slate and write/draw them out. This will help you focus so when everything arrives, you can go straight to work with newfound clarity! Also, it allows you to work on things without having to be AT a computer to do it.

For other reasons I’ve had an idea but no computer before (weather; computer died; couldn’t pay the internet bill – whatever). Mapping it all out on paper helped me feel I was being productive, even during my dry spell. You can draw out your funnel, write your ebook/emails by hand, make notes about your plans for your course…etc.

If you haven’t gotten that far…no niche, product, ebook, etc…I agree with Tina’s advice above. Do the trainings while you wait, and then you can figure out a specific action plan for when everything does arrive.

Sounds like you have some good kids who make good friends too 🙂

The answer to the first question would be: Figure out a system to automate. Meaning, what platform am I going to use to sell my products, what payment gateway, funnel, membership site software, autoresponder, etc. I am an admitted nerd, and I often get caught up in the semantics of “testing everything ad nauseum” but never being satisfied with it, so I’ll try the next bell/whistle that comes along. And in the process, don’t actually end up completing anything.

I realize hard work will continue to be involved, but trust me, completing the first thing was an inner battle with myself. One that it was important to overcome. (And I honestly wonder if first thing was mainly a distraction from having to do the next thing. Mainly because, and I’ll go ahead and admit it, the day-to-day of this stuff is honestly nowhere near as exciting and “sexy” as chasing shiny objects was. I finally got more or less disciplined enough to stop doing that, but I am also realizing that continuing to test different platforms, services, etc, just seems like an extension of that – another way to daydream about my eventual “IM empire”, without having to commit to putting in the actual work.)

Now that I’ve figured it all out, and like it or not, this is what I am going to stick with, at least initially until the thing launches and I can start seeing some success…

The answer to what I can do next is: Implement it! Meaning, complete ebook/video course/membership site/email sequence to the extent that it’s complete enough to launch!

    Kristin,
The format looks great. I like the workbook-type style, I think that adds value. the reader will want to actually use it and give it some thought. (I’m trying to create a workbook, and for some reason it seems very intimidating to me to do so, even though it’s supposed to be easy…You just made it look fairly easy!)

If you’re building your site through WordPress, there’s a free plugin to secure your membership site called S2 Member. It supposedly works just as well as a commercial option such as Wishlist member (which, last I checked, was like $77/year).

When you’re in your WordPress admin, you can just go to a search for plugins and type it in.
Personally, I found S2 Member to be unnecessarily complicated, but some who have the patience may find it useful 🙂

    Claire,
I guess I must have high self-efficacy, because I never think in terms of “What if I fail?”
I always think I’ve got a good idea, even when it turns out to be lousy! LOL
Sometimes I’ll think, “If this project doesn’t work out, on to the next!”
What motivates me? The urge to be creative. And, if I’m honest, the urge to be really, really well-off financially.
My day job (where I barely break even financially) is actually a great motivator. I am convinced I wasn’t meant to live like that forever!
Making a comfortable living by others paying me for my thoughts & ideas – that’s what I would call living the dream!

    Do they know?
    Sort of, to varying degrees.
    Do they understand?
    Not in the least.
My parents are very much the “education and a day job are the keys to life” type people.
So I’ve made a success of myself (by their standards) by choosing a career which I am still in.
I explain IM to my kids (all grown now). They understand, I think, but they (as you accurately put it, Malik), glaze over when I start talking about it. Bruce – I think it goes back to something you said. I talked about it a LOT when they were younger and how it could do a lot for us. Then came setbacks. Now I find the less I talk, the more I am actually doing, and the closer I am getting to achieving success with it.
My parents know less – just that I’m doing “something on the computer”. Which they are happy with, as long as I still have my day job.
Hoping once I can show them proof I’ve successfully matched or exceeded my salary with what I do online, they will respect it more.

    Susan,
I appreciate your honesty in your post. I could relate to some of what you said. I, too, have written a couple of books that are collecting dust on an e-publisher’s website. And I can sooo relate to your “path of least resistance”. I’ve often thought, for example, that if I REALLY want to get motivated to do housework..I should tell myself it’s time to write! 🙂

I have to second Norma. I love that there is so much information available via the Core Access Page. However….As someone who struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder, though, it’s almost too much for me. I get frustrated because I want to look at everything at once, and don’t know where to start to keep me goal-focused and on-task. Now, keep in mind, this is why I joined (and continue to value) your step-by-step training, which I am still using. Not everyone may have this issue.

I guess I have to appreciate that a membership site is different than a coaching program, per se. But I still think it’s kind of information overload upon logging in. Conversely… I can’t wait to dive into all that material! LOL

I think personally it would make a lot more sense to me if it had folders/subfolders. Like:
How to come up with niche ideas
    >Identifying profitable niches
    Copywriting
    >Writing emails
    Designing Products
    >Coming up with ideas
    Traffic
    >Finding/identifying your audience

    etc…

I do this every day. When I wake up, and before I go to bed, just to remind myself that I have much to be grateful for.
My list usually looks like this (I won’t repeat myself every day, because it’s usually the same):

    1. My children
    2. My parents
    3. My pets
    4. My friends
    5. My health
    6. A warm, safe roof overhead – which includes the neighborhood I live in, etc.
    7. My car – went a long time without one in a city where it’s impractical not to own one, so I really appreciate my mobility/freedom
    8. The ability to work without being micromanaged from some office (both my IM pursuits as well as my current career, I work from home for both)
    9. My creative, entrepreneurial spirit
    10. My previous night’s sleep. Sometimes this is actually 1 or 2 on the list because insomnia used to rob me of my quality of life. And I couldn’t appreciate or enjoy everything else in life if not for good sleep.

…I could, and sometimes do, go beyond just 10!

Oh boy, I’m the queen of cheap, so I can add to the list:

Snag-It: $50 annually to do screencasts
    Screen-Cast-O-Matic: $20/annually to make recordings
If you don’t want to pay Amazon AWS to host your videos, you can even upload them to YouTube (free) and hide the fact that it’s a YouTube video with some simple code…LOL
MailChimp: Free email list/autoresponder (for the first 2,000 people subscribed)
Free image sites: See the list on the thread about that, I have several sites I use.
Domain names: Cheap anyway, but if you’re strapped, type “.99 GoDaddy domain name” into Google and get the first year for less than a buck.
I don’t even have Microsoft Office…I use OpenOffice, which is the free version which is open source
    MSC (Proof-reading, voiceovers, sometimes even e-covers): Fiverr.com

Everything Tina suggested is on my bookshelf…LOL!

Plus one of my personal favorites: The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles. My mind was blown reading it, and still is every time I revisit it.

    Plus:
I would also highly recommend all books by Paul McCormick. He explains how the wealthy think, and the mindset it takes to become wealthy (create value for others…etc).

Just a tip, a lot of his stuff is available for free (as is The Science of Getting Rich) in ebook format by doing a simple Google search. But I prefer hard-copy. so I have them in my library as well.

Well, I’m obviously an outlier, but I’ve tried Aweber, GetResponse, Sendlane, and Mailchimp, and I prefer Mailchimp.

Sendlane, GetResponse and Aweber are all reasonable (although let’s face it, when you’re struggling, even that extra $15-19 can be needed for other causes).

But each of them bugged me for 2 issues: How they operated, as well as learning about their deliverability rates (esp Aweber/SendLane).

Also, I know Sendlane is supposed to be marketer-friendly, but I just found it unnecessarily confusing…LOL.

So I thought I would give the free MailChimp a try.

I think it’s actually much easier!

And as a bonus, I save myself that monthly fee until my business really starts to justify paying for it.

Late to the party, but here I am…

    Hi all,
I’m Jen, I’ve had it on my to-do list to join the membership and finally made it happen!
I have a way of making a long story even longer, but will try to keep it semi-brief…

Experience as a writer, and overcame insomnia after a 5-year battle with it.

I put a product about self-publishing on Clickbank (under a pen name), it was a total flop. Determined to learn from it instead of letting it get to me…

I’ve been listening to Sean’s trainings for some time now (although it may not seem like it, Sean! LOL – I really do pay attention). It’s really helped me get focus and clarity. It’s funny because someone in these groups (can’t remember the exact person or wording) basically said, “Why I pay for Sean’s trainings even though I have a hard-drive full of them”…That’s basically me. He has given away so much for no/low cost already. Training that, in my opinion, is second to none! So I am not afraid to pay for it when he has a product I find useful.

What’s funny is, for years I was so anxious to “get that link out” to people..of whatever I was hawking at the time…my own product, or anyone else’s!

Now I’m busy doing what he’s taught.
    Making YouTube vids.
    Creating my products.
Trying to put together email lists.

I don’t even want to put my link to the site I’m building (about how to overcome chronic insomnia) out there yet, because it’s close, but not like I’d like it to be just yet.

What can I help others with here?

Actually, I think I’d make a great COACH myself. I can tell anyone what to do, just really struggle to focus enough to do it myself!
So feel free to let me know if I can assist in:

    – Writing emails (freelance writer, published books/magazines…although I will admit I am learning the persuasive writing needed for IM)

    – Building a website: Can show you how I did it. I basically studied 6 years to figure out the easiest way to do that!! LOL

    – Easy/cheap ways to make products: ebooks, screencasts/videos, etc.

I don’t know what else…but if you think I may be able to help, just ask!

    Bruce,
Hitting the Thanks button once is not sufficient. Thank you for that much-needed reminder!

I’m what they call an “imperfect perfectionist”. I tend to get so caught up focusing on getting everything set up perfectly, that I never get it done at all.

I really stress over putting something out there that doesn’t look 100%, but you’re right, it can always be tweaked later. Actually, as technology goes, it will eventually HAVE to be!

I don’t know why I have such high standards for myself…especially when I look back at things I’ve eagerly bought from other marketers, despite typos, “oh, by the way, the site’s not done, but we’ll let you know when it is,” and so on! 😀

    Thanks Sean,
A little rich for my blood at the moment, but maybe something I would like to use in the future.

Just a question, I got your offer back in August for a complete platform with instructions. (It’s at: http://bit.ly/2i87yE8).

I surely don’t need the instructions that are part of the offer at the moment (that would only confuse me, since I’m already more than halfway there with my current funnel, and getting my answers here). However, I am interested in the system you offered. It was available for 3 pmts of $99. Was that platform built off Beaver Builder? Also, if not, do you have a demonstration of how that one works? (I thought I remembered seeing a link for a demonstration on the site, but don’t see it now, so I may be wrong.)

That makes sense. I came in about 2 weeks in, so I missed some of the initial activity.

The mastermind groups are an interesting idea, but I can see where it might create a challenge to get those who stopped/never started interacting to not feel somehow isolated from the group as a result…I guess it would depend on how they are put together. For all I know, it could provide more incentive to interact. Again, I came in late, so I missed the initial discussion, but would be interested in learning more!

I think it’s natural to “click” with some more than others, whether it’s an in-person setting or an online group like this.

    Exactly, Bruce!

So many people in WF don’t know what to do. They’re trying to learn. They’re “learning” from others who are either knowledgeable themselves, or have been taught erroneously that the way to go about it is to spam or sucker others.

Fortunately, I think we’re off to a great start being able to avoid all of that here. 🙂

Very true, Bruce. I used to do just that (push through to try to get a second wind). Then once I started having endless nights of insomnia, I stopped taking sleep for granted and learned to see it for the gift it is. I’m almost where you are now – able to sleep pretty easily given the right situation. It’s nothing short of a miracle to reach this point after what I’ve been through, which is how I know that other chronic insomniacs have the same goal. It’s amazing how once insomnia takes over the body, it can take over the mind as well. We start thinking irrationally, and therefore behaving irrationally, for example thinking that taking a sleeping pill every night is the answer. So for that reason, my “program”, if you will, consists of a holistic approach with a heavy emphasis on cognitive techniques to “train” yourself to sleep properly again.

Some great ideas there, Bruce! It sounds like you understand my concept…include points from the main book, without taking away from the main book, thereby making it unnecessary to read it.

This definitely gives me some food for thought.

I had not thought of incorporating it as part of the ebook, but I like that idea – the “enhanced version,” if you will.

For now, though, I am going to focus on getting the funnel going and add that later. Because knowing myself, if I start trying to chop up my ebook and add the workbook components right now, that may turn into my new excuse to keep the product from going to market, LOL

I envision my initial funnel as: Free report -> ebook -> upsell to course -> upsell to group coaching -> upsell to 1:1 coaching.
Luckily, I think the workbook component can be easily added into the funnel afterward, once it’s created.

You’ve definitely given me some great concepts to explore when I do make the workbook, though! (And I don’t mean months or years down the road…I am thinking in a matter of weeks I’ll be prepared to discuss and create the workbook. I keep thinking of that saying “money loves speed”…I’ll chew on ideas forever, but am trying to act more quickly in this case so I don’t hold myself up by being an ‘imperfect perfectionist’ and never actually getting it launched!)

    Thanks Bruce,
I’ve basically used that exact method to write my ebook (which is, for all intents and purposes, done).
I literally made an outline of ideas and then just started filling them in.

The workbook though seems…somehow different, to me. More intimidating. I’m not sure why. Seems like “cheating” to put all those lines and call it a book, I guess? LOL.

I also need to figure out how to overlap the info I put in the ebook, without repeating it all. I want the user to be able to read it as a stand-alone product, but it will also compliment the ebook if someone purchased it – if that makes any sense.

This will be a workbook I want to use as part of a funnel, but also sell separately on Amazon or some other platform…so I feel the burden of creating quality content if I’m putting a price tag on it.

I don’t want to hijack Kristin’s topic though, LOL…I’m not even working on the workbook, quite yet. But trust me, once I am, I will need plenty of guidance, I’m sure!

    Sean,
Trust me, I’ve failed BIG before! I am good at that!! 😀

BUT…that said…I have always seen it as an opportunity to learn…what to do differently next time…etc.
I know there’s plenty of trainings on how to see failure differently, and so on…I’ve never really struggled with that. I just stay goal-oriented. “It will be a success…” “Didn’t work out? OK, I’m already on to the next one…”

And thanks…This site is awesome for a lot of reasons! The only drawback? Too easy to get sucked into interacting on the forum, instead of actually working on my business! 😀

    Bruce,
Thanks, I’d been very curious about that platform since first hearing about it. Then I kind of forgot about it. Now, I may have to look it up, because I would be interested in learning more about it.

That’s the funny thing, Sean, is that I think this forum alone would be totally worth the small entry fee! Then add all your expert training and it almost feels wrong to be getting so much for so little! Thanks, I think I’ve found my new home on the ‘net 😀

    Malik,
Every time I’m drawn into a video about Click Funnels, I find myself wanting to get it. I also saw it’s pricey. But I had a feeling it’s well worth the money! I’m not as familiar with LeadPages (though I’ve heard of it); do you use them together? Or do you mean sometimes you use one, and sometimes the other?

    Scott,
Thanks so much for that idea, that is brilliant! I also have a blog, which has a pop-up advising people to go to the home page, but I know the redirect method you are referring to. I’m glad you mentioned it; I think I will set mine up that way, too.

    Dejan,
Thanks for the response. No, although I’ve used OP previously, this was built with Landing Page Monkey. I like the reverse-squeeze concept, which I’m not sure OP has (although let’s face it, I only have the old, old version, so perhaps if I upgrade it would have that option, too).
